    Great day at Hardwood

by genesplicer on 2015-10-05HRD-Hardwood Mountain Bike Park - Oro Station

The PanAm Games Mountain Bike Races at Hardwood were a great day out. The weather was wonderful, the races were great, and the venue was in good shape. I noticed some nice improvements around the Hardwood facility, clearly done just for the games. The staff and volunteers did an exemplary job - wonderful group all around. There were 2 downsides: 1) - the food options were quite poor. It was a nice idea having food trucks cater, but there needed to be at least double the number of trucks given the size of the crowd - the lineups were horrendous, and the trucks all ran out of food. The free water was a very nice gesture. 2) - the lack of re-entry privileges was a major problem area. A rule like this is understandable for a concert, but at an all-day event attended in large part by families, this was unacceptable. My wife and I were there with a 3 year old and a 4 month old. We had planned to take the kids back to the car for lunch and naps in between the races. Instead, I had to turn around at the gates, go back to the car, and bring back the piles of stuff one requires for small children. Then we had to try and get the kids to nap on blankets in the woods, which unsurprisingly did not work well. We had to leave and head back to the car before the men's race was finished because both children were screaming ... Not fun. I do want to re-iterate, again, fantastic job by the staff and volunteers. A couple of changes in planning would have made this the perfect day out!

I didn't know what to expect, however this event was very well organized. It was exciting and Canada won the Gold medals.

    People need to eat !

by yorkiegirl on 2015-07-16HRD-Hardwood Mountain Bike Park - Oro Station

The biking was great, very exciting. It was easy to get around, efficient parking and shuttle buses. The commentary during the races was poor, very difficult to hear anything and little information given. The worst part was the food !!!! Four food trucks for 6,000 people is NOT ENOUGH ! Lineups were massive, and false information was given about the status of the lineups. Many people had brought their own food, even though we had been told it was not permitted. Security guards confiscated some and let other food through. We couldn't even buy a bottle of water without lining up for food! Absolutely dreadful. The tacos were good when we finally got them, though at that point shoe leather would have tasted good.

    Mostly excellent

by Brianjames on 2015-07-15HRD-Hardwood Mountain Bike Park - Oro Station

Hardwood Hills venue and circuit was great. Maps that were handed out were not so good, lacking directional arrows and had part of the map at the top cut off. Volunteers were friendly and tried to be helpful BUT they were not really familiar with the sport or venue. Having young shy people on security at the gate did not really give me a safe feeling. Free water was fantastic but there should have been more refill stations.

Venue was wonderful, Orgranization and set up where top notch. Needless to say the Canadian's athletes were just geat. Food Services were among the worst I have ever seen. Badly understock and not nearly enough of them given crowd size

    Great mountain biking event overall

by cyclingenthusiast on 2015-07-15HRD-Hardwood Mountain Bike Park - Oro Station

The Mountain Bike races at Hardwood were amazing to watch. It was so great to be there to see Canadian women come in first and second in the women's race, and a Canadian man win the men's race. It was a most supportive group of spectators. We were able to get very close to the competitors as they raced, and could freely move around the course seeing the different sections of the track as the riders raced by. The riders were phenomenal! The only disappointment was the food, which had been severely under-catered. There were thousands of people at the event and very few food options, each of which had long line ups for hours and one of which informed the long line that it would be over an hour before the next food would be ready. When you tell people they can't bring food you need to provide an abundance of food, and choose food options that can be quickly prepared. There was also only one water filling area for water bottles. We'd rather have brought a picnic lunch.
