I Had a Perfect Time at Perfect Crime

by Swaine on 2010-05-18Snapple Theater - New York

My wife and I attended the May 16 2010 evening performance of Perfect Crime and we had a perfect time. The quirky characters in this play were portrayed by the small cast of very talented actors. The story line is complicated, but not overly so. There was gunfire, violence, sex, crazy people, alcohol consumption a cross dresser (with reason), and murder. Who could ask for more? I recommend you go, settle in to your slightly lumpy seat and sit back rest assured you are about to be thoroughly entertained for over two hours (with an intermission - but during the break even the stage manager was interesting to watch as she did her set up and checks. The Snapple Theatre is dated but comfortable. If you are not familiar with it, you have a bit of a climb up a few flights of stairs to get to the theatre, but a cozy 6-person elevator is available for those challenged by the steps... just plan ahead, and be patient for your turn to ride.

I've seen better from students and amateurs!

by 57Netty on 2009-10-26Snapple Theatre - New York

The story of how on earth this show has survived all these years would be a heck of a lot more interesting than the plot of the play itself. My son and I went to see it on a recent visit to New York. I came out feeling that I had treated him to an off-Broadway show which had let us both down big time. I have been to Broadway and off-Broadway shows before, so know it is not typical, but he doesn't. He was put off, which is a shame. It is NOT family viewing by the way, with sexual references and swearing. Despite that, the front of house staff were happy enough to sell me a child ticket after I specifically asked about suitability of content. I have seen better productions from drama students at the Edinburgh festival and from amateur companies UK wide. Under normal circumstances, this show wouldn't survive anywhere for more than ten minutes, without a great deal of extra financial support. So what is going on? One of the front of house staff said that the leading lady has only missed four shows in years and years, but instead of employing an understudy, those four shows were cancelled. She all too clearly needs a rest!! The leading lady was the weak link in the chain for me, and for other members of the audience who I spoke to after the show. The audience in the tiny theatre didn't even fill half of it the night we went, some people left at the interval, and the applause at the end was a bewildered smatter. The cast took their bow in a rather perfunctory manner, and left with haste. I feel this smacks of a vanity project, which is fine, but the quality is so poor, it gives off-Broadway a bad name and the audience should be made aware of the circumstances which surround this production to avoid misleading them. It is a tacky, third rate show, with the poorest level of acting you are likely to see on or off Broadway. Avoid it. You'll see much better elsewhere and it gives Broadway on and off, a bad name. It was a waste of a precious night out in a wonderful city.
