A truly fantastic musical experience. I have always felt Glass's musical works deserved more attention from major orchestras. The crowd was notably younger and more excited than usual.

Was my first time able to hear his music live, and it did not disappoint! I've been a fan of his for over 10 years, and to be able to applaud the man in person was a special experience!

Good for Movies Not for Concert

by jimjim3467 on 2010-04-06Chan Centre For The Performing Arts - Vancouver

I love the background music Philip Glass uses in Errol Morris films but I cannot recommend it for a concert. Its repetitive nature and lack of accompaniment make it rather dull after 30 min. I did like to see him in person, however.

    Crowd pleaser!

by lackthereof0 on 2010-04-06Chan Centre For The Performing Arts - Vancouver

My friends and I are in our late twenties and we loved this show! While Glass did play some more challenging work, he also played the major "hits" of sorts that really appeal to everyone, such as the "Metamorphosis" series and "Closing". He also began each set with a bit of commentary covering the context of the piece (many were older, one being from 1979) and sometimes his feelings on the work. The Chan Centre is an amazing hall, as well, with awesome acoustics. We talked about the show all the way home.

    Philip Glass Shattered

by teeheeho on 2010-04-06Chan Centre For The Performing Arts - Vancouver

Most people at the Chan Centre stood up for a standing ovation. Yet Glass' set was so dull, I read this occurrence to mean one of a few things; (1) Glass' audience was not very musically savvy, (2) Glass' audience was not very musically savvy; or (3) well, I just don't know what else. Look, the guy is famous. Who the hell am I to write this review? I instantly knew his score from 'Thin Blue Line' and other films, being a successful filmmaker myself (and thus, the reason that I attended the concert). Now, I'm also a musician and raised in a very musical family, which appreciate classical and otherwise, but Glass' Tremolo in EVER song quickly became very grating. And repetitive. I realized that, when Philip Glass pieces are played one after another, the magic evaporates. I wanted to love Glass' solo piano concert, but was fighting yawns near the beginning of the mere 1.5 hour set. EVERY PIECE WAS VIRTUALLY IDENTICAL, and pretentiously too long! Thank god for the excitement of the crowd that stood for a standing ovation (not once, but twice) at the end, with massive enthusiasm, to champion their hero of...basic piano skills. Congrats.

    Profound experience.

The Chan center is a wonderful venue to host a genius like Philip Glass. The show was an inspiration for all artists. He played the Four Metamorphoses (1989), Etudes (1994-1999), and Mad Rush. All wonderully interpreted by the composer. He stopped between each section to tell stories and insights, which were human and mortal. One of the best performances I have ever seen. Thank you Philip Glass.

Philip Glass - humourous mind, lyrical player

by Kathrin on 2010-04-06Chan Centre For The Performing Arts - Vancouver

Philip Glass has an amazing gift to draw colours on the piano. He is a down to earth man who can tell a delightful, funny story about each of his songs. I would have loved to also hear one of his most famous compositions played by himself, but still 4 stars for a night with Philip Glas!

The Ginsberg poem + song was not my favourite but the rest of the show was brilliant.

    Philip Glass is absolutely incredible!!!

by shagar on 2010-04-06Chan Centre For The Performing Arts - Vancouver

I went to see Philip Glass at the Chan Centre at UBC last night with not much knowledge about who he was or what kind of music he played on the piano. I was absolutely in awe the whole entire time he was playing. His music is so refreshing and relaxing and positive. What a talented man. He is 73 years old and going strong. The dramatic setting at the Chan Centre with the wood curving behind the stage and the red lights giving the illusion of warmth and a sunset really set the scene. I would love to see Philip Glass play again. It was interesting to observe all ages enjoying his music. How often do you get that many people to focus and sit still for 90 minutes. Some fidgeted and others dozed off, but how great for us all to focus on one thing that whole entire time. Well done and congratulations to Philip for an amazing concert.
