Pittsburgh Penguins History

The Pittsburgh Penguins joined the National Hockey League for the 1967-1968 season during the League's expansion from six to 12 teams. The Penguins played at Civic Arena (nicknamed "the Igloo") until the 2009-2010 season, when they moved to PPG Paints Arena (formerly CONSOL Energy Center).

Postseason appearances have been nearly a birthright for the Penguins and their fans since the 1990-1991 season, after which they won five Stanley Cup Championships. They've won six conference championships and earned the Stanley Cup Champion title in back-to-back seasons (2016 and 2017) with coach Mike Sullivan and the great Sidney Crosby as captain at the helm.

In the 2005 NHL Draft the Penguins selected Crosby as their No. 1 pick. Dubbed “The Next One,” Crosby has spent an historic 18 seasons with the Penguins and enters the 2023-2024 at 25th on the league’s all-time scoring list.

The franchise boasts more than a dozen former players in the NHL Hall of Fame, including Mario Lemieux, Ron Francis, Mark Recchi, Bryan Trottier, and Paul Coffey. The Penguins most recently made the playoffs in 2022. To date, they've appeared in the playoffs 37 times in their 55 seasons.

My First NHL Game Was AMAZING!

by Porter on 2023-10-14Scotiabank Centre - Halifax

I have never been able to attend an NHL game and I'm so thankful that I was able to go to this game. But this match up was too perfect for me to not attempt to get some tickets. I couldn't believe how quickly these sold out but I was fortunate enough to get 2 tickets for my father and I. It was great to see Sid the Kid and Erik karlsson! I'm sure Sidney must have really enjoyed playing in his home province and so close to his hometown! But my favorite team is the Senators so for me this was a perfect night, watching my favorite hockey players along with my favorite team, with my Dad who by the way is in a wheelchair and want to thank everyone involved for the assistance they provided to make not only accessing the building but also our seats an extremely flawless experience. Again, thank you to Irving Oil for sponsoring this event, thank you to the Folks at the Scotiabank Center, and thank you for everyone else behind the scenes who made this experience a memory I will cherish for the rest of my life.

    Great experience!

by Fecteau on 2023-10-05Scotiabank Centre - Halifax

The game was great and the fans were even better! Would be great if there was a way for the venue to facilitate a more efficient movement of concession lines.

Great game but horrible experience getting into the venue!

by Baygirl on 2023-10-05Scotiabank Centre - Halifax

The game was great and it would be wonderful to see more events such as this come to Halifax. However, something has to be done to fix the process of entering ScotiaBank Centre. I paid a great deal of money for four seats section 22 row e right behind the Pittsburg Bench. I stood in line from 5:50 to 7:05 before I was finally able to access the building. We got to our seats after the puck drop! I was fuming! I’ve been to many events throughout Canada and the US in bigger arenas and entry was smooth. World juniors was brutal as well. ScotiaBank Centre has not improved on using the system they’ve gotten worse. Not enough doors open or security check points. If you know you have a sold out event, staff it appropriately! GET YOUR ACT TOGETHER SCOTIABANK!

    NHL in Halifax

by hockey fan on 2023-10-05Scotiabank Centre - Halifax

Great evening watching NHL caliber hockey. Crosby and Batherson didn't disappoint and despite the Penguins losing we enjoyed the fast pace.

    Incredible evening!

The Nova Scotia Showdown was an incredible event. Sidney Crosby, The Pittsburgh Penguins, Halifax, Nova Scotia and the NHL outdid themselves. Kudos to everyone involved!!

    Poor Logistics

by Sens Fan on 2023-10-05Scotiabank Centre - Halifax

The arena was not prepared for this event. They had limited doors open at each gate so it took 58 minutes in line to get it. They needed to open the doors earlier or have more doors open for a timely entrance into the event. This happened at the WJHC in January so they should have known better. A huge part of this event was welcoming home Crosby and not being in the rink until after puck drop deprived many fans of this in the pregame introductions. Perhaps if he scores during the game or came out after the game when named to the 3 starts this might have been mitigated, but that didn't happen either. I can't see spending the money on a NHL Preseason Game if it comes back in the future.

    Penguins vs. Canucks game

    by HockeyFan on 2020-06-20

Went to a penguins and Canucks game and it was one of the best experiences of my life. During warmup, stand behind the goal on the Pens side and kris letang flips over at least 2 pucks every game. Overall great experience!

    Pens vs sabres

by Hamburgler on 2020-02-25PPG Paints Arena - Pittsburgh

Great overall experience the event staff was very helpful and friendly. The seats we had were great. First row of the upper bowl. Had a good view of the entire game. The only downside was the over priced concessions. Lots of variety though.
