The opening acts were fantastic. Exceptional local talents. Despite the main act being an ultra modern ensemble there were still evident traditional influences. My favorite aspects of the show were the performances of the singers. I was pleasantly surprised by the dancers in the Sevillanas. What creativity ! Over all, the show was superb. Bravo! Bravo! Bravo
Three acts: two Canadian and guest artist from Spain. All were expert in their shows. There was noticeable variety from all three groups which gave dance and music with enough variety to appeal to a general audience.
I have been to numerous Flamenco events both inside Spain and outside (including the UK and Canada). Unfortunately this event was not a very authentic Flamenco experience. Flamenco dance is very rich and unique but the performance I saw on Saturday night was not. I don't know if they tried to make it "more international" but the Flamenco element was missing from the dance. And the music was frankly not so much Flamenco either. The guitar, which is the essence of the Flamenco music, was so faded and instead other instruments such as the piano were dominating. So the bottom line is, although the whole performance was entertaining, it was not an authentic Flamenco experience and should have not been advertised as such: International Flamenco Festival.
Went to Spain this summer and greatly enjoyed a few flamenco shows over there. Was very happy to be able to go to such a high quality flamenco show outside of Spain, right here in Toronto..
Unbelieveable athleticism and awesome vocals and music
It was a first time we saw Rafaela Carrasco live on stage. She's indeed one the best flamenco performers we saw to date. Performance of the Canadian Flamenco stars who opened the evening was quite attractive. Less pleasant for us were the female vocal solos done to piano music. Nevertheless it was a great night of Flamenco dance, Spanish guitar, and singing.
Excellent in all regards. The first half is closer to the folk roots. The second half (after the intermission) veers in the direction of deliberate classicizing of what started as a folk art. (Recall what happened to jazz!) Reliance on lighting is ingenious and effective, albeit it occasionally overdone.
Poor performance with overpriced tickets. Performance started almost 15 minutes late, intermission was about 20 minutes, so instead of 75 minutes of performance people were forced to be there for more than 2.5 hours.
most elegant flamenco filled with enchanted music, elegant costume, modern influence on traditional flamenco...was glad that I went to see the show.
