About

RODRIGUEZ IN CONCERT:

Forgotten '70s folk hero Sixto Rodriguez finally has the audience he deserves. Enjoying a renewed interest in his music spurred by acclaimed Academy Award-winning documentary Searching for Sugar Man, Rodriguez released his first music in nearly 30 years in 2012, delighting fans around the world who thought his story ended with 1971 cult favorite Coming From Reality. At his 2013 shows, Rodriguez stunned with new songs from the documentary soundtrack alongside his classic '70s material, proving he's more than worthy of his belated stardom and building excitement for a new album and tour in 2014.

BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT:

Born in Detroit to Mexican immigrant parents, Sixto Rodriguez was named after his position as the sixth child in his family. Dropping out of high school at 16, he focused instead on playing shows in Detroit's various bars and clubs, attracting the eye of producer Harry Balk for his debut 1967 single "I'll Slip Away." Signing to Sussex records a few years later, Rodriguez released his 1970 debut album Cold Fact, quickly following it up with 1971 sophomore album Coming From Reality. Neither album sold well in the US, resulting in his dismissal from the label and retirement from music, but by the mid-‘70s the albums had become hugely popular in Australia and South Africa —completely unbeknownst to Rodriguez. In the late '90s, two South African fans documented their search for Rodriguez, who was rumored to be dead, resulting in 2012 documentary Searching for Sugar Man. The film took home the Oscar for Best Documentary Feature, leading to a flurry of media attention and a renewed interest in his music. With new material and tour dates scheduled for 2014, fans will have the opportunity to see Rodriguez soak up his second act as he hits the road for a series of highly anticipated concerts.

FANS WHO BOUGHT TICKETS SAY:

"Rodriguez was better than expected, and I expected a lot! He played some amazing guitar, sang his heartbreaking poetic lyrics, and surprised us all with some incredibly well-timed corny jokes."

"Rodriguez has perfect pitch!! His music was enjoyable, loved how he mixed it up playing other artists too!! Fun show."

    Pathetic

by RobinKing on 2018-08-27Humphreys Concerts By the Bay - San Diego

Disappointing, unfortunately Rodriguez is well past his prime. Having listened to his earlier work and having watched the movie Searching for Sugarman we had higher expectations, without a back up band he tried to command the stage on his own and it just didn't work. He was out of tune and off key all night.

One of those life completion events!

by Joannetta on 2018-08-16Moore Theatre - Seattle

Since learning about Rodriguez in the documentary, Searching for Sugarman, and then listening to his music, I have been so inspired by his story and talent. The chance to see him perform was truly a phenomenal life completion event - I feel wholly blessed for having this experience. Rodriguez's performance was magnificent for the humanity and grace he exudes, along with his talent that is mammoth in its humility. Thanks Rodriguez for giving so such when you could be just kicking back at home!

    SUGARMAN

by Zebrazebra on 2017-09-22MTELUS - Montreal

II have the DVD of Sugarman plus two CD's that I play regularly. I expected to hear Rodriguez own music throughout the evening. It isn't the first time I have seen a musician cover some "favourite' songs that are not his own. Often it doesn't work. For me this was one of those times. When he was doing his own original work he was excellent. It is a great loss to the music & public community that we in Canada missed hearing his genius when he was in his prime and apparently touring in Australia as well as South Africa. The man is a legend & I love his music.......just wanted to hear more of his creations --- they touch your soul.

Too many covers, not enough originals!

    by Eliza11 on 2017-09-22MTELUS - Montreal

The crowd was already won over for Rodriguez, who benefits from tremendous sympathy capital from those who saw his documentary, ''Waiting for Sugarman.'' People were poised and ready to hear his wonderful original material, gleefully singing along to ''I wonder'' and ''Sugarman.'' Unfortunately, only a handful of those songs were played and instead, songs like: ''La Vie en Rose'' and ''Light My Fire'' were chosen from a set list whose pacing was all over the place. Why?? You could feel the audience's interest slowly slipping away and people began leaving before the end. It's a shame, given that his songs are wonderful and his small band sounded great! Please, in the future, Mr. Rodriguez, play us your stuff, it's great and it's what we want to hear!

    We love you Rodriguez!!

    by Hipfan311 on 2017-09-20Massey Hall - Toronto

The show was amazing!! Back up band was a nice addition to Rodriguez performance. It helped to enhance the sound, but didn't overpower him. Third time seeing him and it was definitely the best yet!! He is an amazing soul!!

Rodriguez was entertaining and charming. The opening band was good, but the second lady that "sang" was terrible. I felt like I was at a high school café. I didn't feel it was worth $100.00 per person.

    Rodriguez was Good

by Guerra on 2017-09-18Massey Hall - Toronto

Rodriguez was his usual Self, Humble and without the Attitude that some Performers have , namely that They are 'God's Gift'. Roderguez Guitar playing was Excellent, along with His Singing.

    Disappointed

    by Spandex22 on 2017-09-18Massey Hall - Toronto

I don't know if it was the lack of equipment or where I was sitting but the the entire show seemed below par. I guess I'll stick to listening to the album and save my money next time.

    A true musical legend

by QuicksilverSolutions on 2017-09-18Massey Hall - Toronto

No one like him. A true one of a kind. Bob Dylan has nothing on him. A true musical legend of our time. NOT to be missed! Awesome guitar playing also and a true gentleman. It still so saddens me that he missed out on such a big part of his musical career due to misinformation. Been enjoying his music since '85.
