ROISIN MURPHY IN CONCERT:

Irish art pop songstress Roisin Murphy has been on fire since returning from an eight-year hiatus in 2015. Her acclaimed comeback album Hairless Toys was nominated for the prestigious Mercury Prize, and in 2016 she announced her first-ever North American tour. Stateside fans have been waiting a long time to see Ms. Murphy – her reputation as a legendary performer dates back to her time as one-half of Moloko, a visionary '90s dance pop duo whose stylish live performances combined cutting-edge production and avant-garde stage design with Murphy's killer voice, striking fashion sense, and theatrical performance style. Her solo shows are just as mind-blowing, featuring multiple costume changes, state-of-the-art visuals, and a full backing band that helps launch her potent blend of disco, house, and hot jazz into the stratosphere. Murphy delivers pure pop perfection every time she takes the stage, and her first US solo tour promises ticket buyers an arty and imaginative dance party for the ages.

BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT:

Irish-born, British-raised Roisin Murphy was bullied growing up but found acceptance in her teens as a fixture of Sheffield's underground club scene. Following a brief stint playing in a post-punk band she met producer Mark Brydon at a party, and in 1994 they formed dance pop duo Moloko. The pair's unique chemistry (they were dating at the time) translated to the recording studio – their 1995 debut album Do You Like My Tight Sweater spawned the Top 10 US Dance hit "Fun for Me" and landed them on tour with British rockers Pulp. They went on to release three more acclaimed albums in the late '90s and early '00s, notching dance hits like "Sing It Back" and "The Time Is Now" before ending both their romantic and professional relationships in 2003. Murphy made her solo debut two years later with 2005's Ruby Blue, a critical success that drew praise for its blend of electronic and acoustic elements. She followed up in 2007 with the equally well-received Overpowered, but it would be another eight years before she released her next album. It was worth the wait – Murphy's third album, 2015's Hairless Toys, was a commercial and critical success, cracking the Top 20 on the UK Albums Chart and earning a Mercury Prize nomination. She quickly followed up in 2016 with her fourth album Take Her Up to Monto, another lauded effort that drew her out for her first North American solo tour.

    3 hours late..... please

    by Project1 on 2016-11-03Phoenix Theatre - Toronto

Roisin was great as usual, but 3 hours late. OK, I get it: if it says 7PM on the ticket - it means the opening act at 7:30-8:00 and main artist at 9-ish. We were there at 9. No opening act, just some annoying DJ set (sorry dude). At 9:30 a couple of somnambulant creatures showed up on the stage to fix the equipment. People are standing and losing their patience. At 10 some people started screaming. At 10:15 musicians showed up. I am not a whining person and I do love Murphy (I was waiting for this show for a long time), but seriously, Roisin, please talk to your tour managers and organizers. It is called a DISRESPECT.
