The play was absolutely beautiful and entertaining. The costumes were very well made and realistic. The dresses were gorgeous but also the men’s attire was precise from their hats to their boots. The way the stage was presented was also very well done since each entry had their own purpose and with a trick of the lights or a new element put on stage changed the room in its entirety. Of course if the old English its not what you prefer you might not like the story but the actors made it easy to understand and follow as they articulate very well and sure made the audience laughed.

    Romeo and Juliet a Success!

by forevergreeneyes on 2010-11-01National Arts Centre - Ottawa

All in all, it was an excellent interpretation of Romeo and Juliet, Romeo's energy was great! The aunt was pretty funny although sometimes she was hard to understand. Was not a fan of Juliet's acting (the blonde Juliet) it didn't feel genuine, forced at times. Marcutio was excellent comedic relief! The actor was made for that role.

    Romeo & Juliet was intense!

I took my 13 year old daughter and my best friend. It was my daughter's first Shakespearean play - very exciting for her. We all loved the play.

What a great evening! Next time I would definitly choose to sit in the mid section of the theatre even if i were back further. I found I was watching alot of the play from behind the actors.

    A Disappointment

by Kvisten on 2010-10-29National Arts Centre - Ottawa

We attended this production of Romeo and Juliet with our 15-year-old niece. She loves the play and has filled the role of Juliet several times in her native Sweden. She thought the play was fine, but had seen other more engaging productions. My husband and I were quite disappointed with this version. The lighting was so dark that often we could barely make out which characters were on stage. Perhaps it was for moody effect, but it was very frustrating. The direction was strange, in the sense that key moments between the main characters were given very short shrift, and other tangential aspects of the play were given lots of time. It interrupted the flow of the story, and we found ourselves waiting for the play to get on with it. Finally, there was no discernible chemistry between the two leads. All of this meant that we felt curiously detached from a work that usually evokes strong emotion. For almost $300 in ticket price and fees, it was not good value for money. But you can't win them all. It will not deter us from attending future events.

    Romeo and Juliet

by Anonymous on 2010-10-25National Arts Centre - Ottawa

We thoroughly enjoyed this wonderful, classic production of Romeo and Juliet. We thought bringing in the graduating class of the National Theatre School added to the quality of the production and highlighted the tragedy of young vs. old in a way we haven't seen before. All of the young players were commendable, but the young man who played Romeo (Hugh Portman) was a true standout.
