    Great vocalist & brilliant composer

by LAH on 2022-05-25National Arts Centre / Centre national des Arts - Ottawa

Throughly enjoyed the concert. Background art was intriguing and suited the music. Wainright's vocals are stronger than I realized - top performer

    Rufus & Family

by hard to please on 2020-02-12Queen Elizabeth Theatre - Toronto

I knew that this show was a "Family" affair, but was hoping for a bit more Rufus, and certainly a bit more of a polished show. This show came across as a Kitchen party with most members of the family taking turns in featuring mostly songs from Kate. I'm not sure that the format required in a venue like the Princess Theatre was the best for this show; I think it would have worked better in an outdoor venue or maybe even "in the round" -- like the old Ontario Place Forum.... As a "Family" they appeared to come in unrehearsed -- which IMO was not what I paid for; but then, I am hard to please.....

    Fun family disfunction

by Sassy Girl on 2020-02-12Queen Elizabeth Theatre - Toronto

Always like the Wainwrights - have seen Rufus 3 times and Martha 6. And while this was pretty good overall the unrehearsed, sloppy nature of the performance is a little insulting to the audience who paid serious money to see it. They didn't even introduce all the stage performers and it felt a bit too much like a visit to their house at Thanksgiving - I know that's partly the point but rehearsing and presenting polished songs should be considered.

    Too much

by David on 2020-02-11Queen Elizabeth Theatre - Toronto

This was too much a show case for Rufus and Martha. There was none of the melodic singing of Kate and Anna Even when Martha sang one of the songs she belted it out The best performer was Loudon Wainwright. I only heard him once and he was amazing I left half way through.

    Top of his game!

by amoremusica on 2017-07-16National Arts Centre / Centre national des Arts - Ottawa

This was my first Rufus show. It was a crisp, flawlessly co-ordinated effort with the National Arts Centre Orchestra featuring a well rounded set list of Rufus's best evocative ballads and symphonic pieces with two classical interludes. Vocally Rufus is better than ever these days, a powerful, clear baritone/tenor even better than on record and definitely something to be experienced live. The once wild, slurry party boy is now a slick, mature professional! Newly renovated Southam Hall made for a beautiful and fitting venue. Special props also to the youthful NAC orchestra and handsome, vibrant conductor Jayce Ogren as well as the lighting and sound techs...I am still blown away!

An Intimate Evening in Southam Hall

by JohnnyCanuck1953 on 2017-07-15National Arts Centre / Centre national des Arts - Ottawa

It is difficult to create an intimate, I'm playing just for you atmosphere in Southam Hall, especially with a full orchestra as back-up band, but Rufus Wainwright did it. Even though he is on a grueling tour he convinced me that he really was thrilled to be in Canada and Ottawa and playing for us. The addition of the NAC Orchestra did not overpower the voice and piano, it was a match made in acoustic heaven.
