We all enjoyed the play, The scenery was wonderful and how they moved everything is mind boggling. Having Spider Man fly right up in front of us in the balcony was amazing. We would recommend that anyone could see this show. Adults should be impressed with the scenery and kids would love the flying around..............I am not a kid and I sure did!
This play lacks in so many areas. The story line is predictable and drags. The acting is passable but nothing great. The music is not good at all. Which pains me to say because I love everything U2. It felt far too long. Perhaps because of the poor quality of the performance. I did enjoy the acrobatics but not until the very end. Sigh. I so wanted to like this. Save your money and see something better.
While in NYC recently my husband and I decided to see Spider-man TURN OFF THE DARK at a Wednesday matinee performance (we were squeezing it in between other events, so not the purpose of our trip). Overall I would give it 3.5 out of 5 stars. There were a few sound issues (mikes not on at the right time, bursts of noise, etc) that I would not expect at a Broadway level performance. We did not have the main Superman actor and I would say he was decent as a singer but not breathtakingly good. The U2 penned music was fun but it was a bit strange that some songs were more 'rock' style and others were more musical theatre - an interesting mix, not sure how it all gelled together. The lead female was pretty strong, and overall the singing/acting was good but not excellent. I enjoyed the choreography. The technical feats of swinging around the theater were the most fun part of the show and they were done very well. The story also improved as you got into the second half of the show; the first half moved a little bit slowly, and more of the acrobatics in the second half kept the show exciting. We did wonder if a few of the 'rough edges' were due to it being a Wednesday matinee (and therefore less popular) performance. Overall I would take my kids and/or recommend to a friend, but not as spectacular as some of the other shows currently on Broadway.
Spider-Man is a story line we've enjoyed for decades, comic books, cartoons, blockbuster feature films. Sadly the stage play is a total bust, perhaps if the producers had spent some of their $75 million on casting, music, cherography, composers, writers rather then 99% of the budget going towards rigging two actors above the audience for three minutes to have a faux street fight, this could have been a better production. However they chose the path all producers risk when they ignore the story, they pray that their customers won't have the Spidy sense to look past the big glitzy signs, ads and banner to see if there's anything worth paying money for. Save your dough and your time for one of the other amazing NYC experiences.
Loved all the subtle U2 references--great music; great job on the special effects and great job by all singers!
Where to begin...this show was very disappointing. The stunts and flying were amazing, but everything else should be greatly improved. The music was very confusing and not very catchy. It felt as though many of the songs lacked a chorus. The transition between dialogue and song was often very awkward. Also, the characters came across as somewhat one dimensional and juvenile. While we did appreciate some of the sets, we felt like a lot of the blocking was inadequate. For example, there were times when more than one Spider-man was visible to the audience (we could see one spider-man waiting for his cue to come on while another was performing on stage). The show as a whole was a little strange, and would benefit from choosing a clearer target audience. It was not clear whether the show was aimed at the interests of children or adults. With that being said, the actors did the best they could with the material given. We appreciate their effort and commitment to the show.
This was an awesome show, form the singing, dancing and the high flying stunts. Enjoyable for all.
The arial theatric of the show were very impressive. I thought the show was quite good and would recommend it to someone with kids or teenagers who want to take in a broadway show when in NYC.
High energy, great music. Our Spiderman was an understudy making his Broadway debute...from this performance this young man looks like he will go far! Loved how Spidey flies into the audience and the set of the Crystler Building was awesome.
