Saskatchewan Roughriders History

The Saskatchewan Roughriders are a professional team in the Canadian Football League (CFL) and one of the oldest professional North American sports franchises. Originally competing as the Regina Rugby Club in 1910, the team name settled permanently on the Saskatchewan Roughriders in 1946 before joining the nascent CFL in 1958. The Roughriders made the playoffs every year from 1962 to 1976, winning their first Grey Cup in 1966. Overall, the team has made 19 Grey Cup appearances, with four wins including 1989, 2007 and 2013. Across their history, the Saskatchewan Roughriders roster has consisted of 20 Canadian Football Hall of Famers, seven Annis Stukus Trophy winners for the CFL’s top head coach and and four Most Outstanding Players, as well as four recipients of the Most Outstanding Canadian Award, six Most Outstanding Offensive Lineman Awards, three John Agro Special Teams Awards and two Most Outstanding Defensive Player Awards. The Roughriders’ rivalry with the Winnipeg Blue Bombers has led to two annual matchups between the traditional Labour Day Weekend game and the now-dubbed Banjo Bowl the following weekend.

Saskatchewan Roughriders at Mosaic Stadium

Rider Nation have been gathering for Saskatchewan Roughriders home games at Mosaic Mosaic Stadium since its opening in 2017. The 33,500-seat venue replaced the Roughriders’ long-standing home at the historic Taylor Field after eight decades. The spectator-friendly setting is complete with sunken-bowl seating and tiled panels that partially cover three sides of the field to protect from the Prairie weather. Fans set a capacity record at 33,506 during a 2019 Saskatchewan Roughriders matchup against rivals the Winnipeg Blue Bombers. In 2022, Mosaic Stadium hosted the Grey Cup for the first time, marking the fourth time the championship game was held in the city of Regina.

Regina is the best place to watch a CFL game!

by Ryan the Rider Fan on 2023-09-06Mosaic Stadium - Regina

The lines for the gate and for food move quickly. The staff and volunteers are friendly and helpful. There is a huge security and police presence so the atmosphere is safe and fun. Pregame activities are well planned and the city welcomes fans of the Riders and the visiting team with open arms. Watching a CFL game in Regina is a great experience!

    It was awesome

by Railboy on 2023-09-06Mosaic Stadium - Regina

It was the greatest experience ever have been to Rider games before but this was so great. I took 3 people who have never been to a live CFL game. They were all in their 70s and told me they loved ever minute of it. We had great seats. The only thing was they run out of Draft beer before half time. The food was great and easily assessable. The entrance was slow cause the sun was giving the gate people a nightmare as the scanners were having a problem picking them up. All in all was great. The shuttle’s to the game were very fast. Happy
