About

SHANE KOYCZAN IN CONCERT:

Award-winning Canadian poet Shane Koyczan brings electric energy and razor-sharp wit to spare every time he steps on stage, completely captivating each audience member with his unique world view. At his live shows Koyczan uses his rhythmic cadence and impressive word play to reveal a startling amount of honesty and vulnerability, captivating audiences with his unique slam poetry aesthetic. He easily flows into the rhythms of hip hop, getting ticket buyers bobbing their heads while he unfolds an increasingly literate frame of mind. Fans of music, comedy, and poetic thinking won't want to miss this wordsmith on tour.

BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT:

Originally from the Northwest Territories of Canada, Shane Koyczan's early poetry was informed by such traumatic events as being abandoned by his parents and bullied by his schoolmates. In 2000 he became the first Canadian to win the National Poetry Slam’s Individual Championship. This recognition allowed him to publish two books of poetry entitled Visiting Hours and Our Deathbeds will be Thirsty, as well as a novel in verse titled Stickboy. Koyczan experienced a mainstream breakthrough when he turned his poem “To This Day” into an animated video that received 1.4 million views in its first two days on YouTube, thanks to support from anti-bullying movements. The impact of the poem was so profound that Koyczan was eventually selected to read the poem and show the animation at a TED Conference.

    Wonderful performer

by nl on 2022-12-04The Danforth Music Hall - Toronto

We loved Shane and his amazing opening act. We give the performers 5 stars, but we couldn't leave a 5 star review because the event was listed as 7pm and Shane didn't go on until 8:30pm. Why did we need to sit in our reserved seats for over an hour with no entertainment?

No words can adequately describe this man's brilliance

by Sam on 2022-11-30Algonquin Commons Theatre - Ottawa

This was my 7th time seeing Shane Koyczan perform live, and as always, he was gripping, vulnerable, hilarious and thought-provoking all in one time-stopping performance. I have never experienced another artist who, when on stage can make everything else in the world go quiet. I wish I had the words to adequately express the gift this wonderful human possess. And a very deserving shout out to his opening act Charlie as well! Charlie was fantastic and the world needs to hear their story.

    Fantastic Show !!! Must See

by Brian on 2022-11-28The Danforth Music Hall - Toronto

Shane was introduced to me by my son. I went into this show expecting to enjoy it. However, I was amazed and blown away by the performance. In addition, he took the time to meet everyone afterwards. This is a must see show!

    Awesome performance

by Mike Gman on 2022-11-27The Danforth Music Hall - Toronto

Amazing performance. Humble, emotional, authentic and on poiNt with every topic he spoke to. Felt like l was in his living room as a good friend sharing his experience during the lockdown, the loss of grandma and the hope he has for the future.

    Exceptional! Perfect in every way!

by Bernice on 2022-05-06Festival Place - Sherwood Park

The venue was so intimate it made you forget he wasn’t in your living room. The performance was amazing and completely emotionally exhausting- exactly what I’d hoped it would be.

    Shane Koyczan is Magic

by No on 2022-05-05Festival Place - Sherwood Park

Seeing Shane live is a transformative experience. He is a magician with words. He his mind-bendingly funny and articulates sorrow with delicate precision. He helps you remember what it feels like to be human. If I could see him live every night, I would. Any price you pay for a ticket is a bargain.

Spoken Word has never been so good

by Vtlbill on 2017-03-08Columbia City Theater - Seattle

I've read Shane's work and seen him perform on YouTube. But to see him live was the most incredible night. He is super funny and extremely talented. I would recommend him to anyone even if they are not familiar with his work. Great show.
