About

SLOAN IN CONCERT:

Power pop titans Sloan have achieved cult status in their native Canada and built a diehard following around the world thanks to their potent blend of crunchy riffs and catchy hooks. The band's four members share songwriting duties, and the result is a wildly diverse sound that encompasses jaunty piano ditties, charging pop-punk, and stirring power ballads. Each member sings their own songs in concert, treating fans to a steady stream of distinct styles – from Chris Murphy's bright tenor to Patrick Pentland's rocking growl – before wowing them with gorgeous four-part harmonies. Their all-together-now enthusiasm in concert has ticket buyers singing along on stadium-worthy anthems like "Underwhelmed," "The Other Man," and "The Rest of My Life." Every aspect of Sloan's eclectic, infectious sound is cranked to the max when they perform live, and fans can’t get enough of the rocking party.

BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT:

Bassist Chris Murphy and drummer Andrew Scott formed Sloan in 1991 while attending the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design. Guitarists Patrick Pentland and Jay Ferguson joined shortly after, creating the core lineup that’s remained unchanged for over 25 years. The band made their full-length debut in 1992 with Smeared, and instantly caught on with alternative rock fans in Canada. Unfortunately they had frequent disputes with their record label Geffen, who balked at promoting their hooky rock outside Canada during the grunge-obsessed '90s, and following the release of their 1994 sophomore album Twice Removed they split with the label. They used their own label Murderecords to release their 1996 album One Chord to Another, which was a huge critical and commercial success at home and received rave reviews when it was released in the US a year later. The group amassed fans through the late '90s and early '00s with perpetual touring and consistently solid records, and in 2006 they finally cracked the US charts with their eighth album Never Hear the End of It. Their popularity continued to grow abroad, leading up to the Top 10 debut of their 2014 album Commonwealth on the Billboard Heatseekers chart. Well into their third decade together, Sloan continues to impress both critics and fans with their adventurous recordings and powerhouse concerts.

A great show, a mix of new and the classics.

    by Felicia L on 2023-07-17

My partner and I really enjoyed this show. The band did a mix of their newer stuff and their classics and it was great to have a mix. The sound and lighting were excellent and the venue was spacious and clean. Its been nice to see this band move away from dive'ish venues and into cleaner, more accessible and maintained venues. Over all it was great and event the opener act was not that bad. Our only complaint was the price of drinks at the venue - History that was a bit much. As 15 for a basic drink and dirty looks if you did not tip 15% on the machines, from the bartenders that we could have done without. Which was odd because all the other staff were wonderful, the bartenders could use an attitude adjustment. That is a venue issue though and not the band. Sloan always delivers and this show is no different.

    Sloan @ History Toronto

    by dcibic on 2023-07-10

Really great and fun concert by Sloan in a great venue! The band played two excellent sets for a total of over two hours, with great energy from the band and a pumped crowd of all different ages. The band featured most of the “Steady” album released last year, which is a super album, but we’re also able to play most of the newer and older hits over the two hours - although with 13 albums and all the super tracks they have you can’t hit everything :) Well done to Jay, Andrew, Chris, Patrick and Greg for bringing it and having fun like the true pros they are 👍

    Great Show!

    by Skamaster on 2023-07-10

The Sloan concert at History nightclub was an awesome night of entertainment! The opening band Kiwi Jr. got the crowd warmed up with a slate of rockin' tunes. Sloan then hit the stage with an opening set of more recent tunes and after a brief intermission, came back to the stage with a closing set of new and, of course, favs from the past (Underwhelmed, Other Man, Rest of My Life, Money City Maniacs). They returned with an encore, culminating in You See The Good in Everyone. The venue was great too, with cool temps and well-run security. The beer prices, tho...$15 for a tall boy.

I absolutely LOVE the Navy Blues album and when I heard it was a Navy Blues tour, I got so excited thinking maybe Sloan would be playing the whole album. It was honestly a dream come true when I read that they actually were! I was on the dance floor eagerly awaiting each song and knowing which one it was going to be made it even better! It was so much fun to sing along and dance my heart out.
