This particular event was a twice-in-a-lifetime occasion, as the brothers Mael were presenting a re-arranged version of their 1974 album "Kimono My House" with a full, 50-piece orchestra. But generally, Sparks are a quirky pop-rock band with witty lyrics and catchy melodies, sung in an amazing falsetto by Russell accompanied by Ron on piano or synth. There's somehow more to it, though, than just that. I think part of it is their age-defying reliability -- they seem almost unchanged from the early 70s, but were so far ahead of their time then that popular music is only just now really catching up with them.
Anyway, the orchestra and accompanying re-arrangements were stellar and Russel's energy and enthusiasm infectious. Their fans love them to bits, because they never disappoint either in small intimate venues, or (in this case) the sold-out two-night 2,200-seat Ace Theatre gig.
