STEVE WINWOOD IN CONCERT:

Rock icon Steve Winwood continues to inspire with his soulful voice and authentic songwriting more than half a century after his debut. At his live shows Winwood touches on every period of his long and storied career, treating fans to favorites from his time with the Spencer Davis Group, Traffic, and Blind Faith before going on to perform '80s solo hits like "Higher Love" and "Roll With It". A virtuoso musician who surrounds himself with one of the best backing bands in the business, Winwood never fails to do justice to do his beloved classics justice on his must-see tours.

BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT:

Born to a musical family in Birmingham, England, Steve Winwood was performing music with his older brother and father by the age of eight. He immersed himself in the city's rhythm and blues scene while still in high school, and at age 14 he joined blue-eyed soul outfit the Spence Davis Group. He recorded several hits with the group before helping form prog rock outfit Traffic, with which he also had several hits. Winwood launched his solo career in 1977 with a self-titled debut album, and in 1980 he scored his first hit with the single "While You See a Chance" from the album Arc of Diver. He continued to release successful albums throughout the '80s, racking up several No. 1 singles including "Higher Love" and "The Finer Things". With nine solo albums under his belt and numerous releases from former projects, Winwood has plenty of classic material to draw from for his career-spanning sets while on tour.

FANS WHO BOUGHT TICKETS SAY:

"The strength of Steve Winwood's voice has not diminished one iota over the years. His band was as tight as lightning and the jam sessions paired with each of his tunes were INCREDIBLE!"

"His voice is still so soulful and amazing. His band is as tight as ever as they have been touring together for a while now. They like to indulge in extended, jazzy jams which give everyone in the band a chance to shine."

"A man of incredible talent, with an outstanding band. His voice is not that different from 40 years ago. Played a nice selection of old and newer. Well worth seeing."

    Stevie Winwood

Great concert by a great song writer and singer. The rest of band was phenomenal. I would have liked to hear "Valerie" and "Arc of a Diver", but realize he has had so many hits he could not fit them all in.

    3.5 Winwood

by mikw on 2012-11-19Orpheum Theatre - Vancouver

First the opening act aptly named the Wood Brothers were excellent. Slide guitar, bluesy rock and country. Steve's vocals were a bit pushed (age) but the band were playing some great variants on the old classics. the mix seemed to be a bit off at our nose-bleed level of the theatre and the organ was the dominant instrument. If you are attending one of these shows, i recommend not cheaping-out as I did and get close for what I assume was a better sound.

Was completely mesmerized by the whole show. Steve took us from his Blind Faith to Traffic to his solo career and all the way back to Spencer Davis Band. Loved it. His voice was still great, only wavered in one song.. Fabulous. He was obviously moved by the true appreciation of the audience.

by Pheffes on 2012-11-15Orpheum Theatre - Vancouver

He didn't play his best hits and he rely only in his accustics, he prolonged some of the songs too much by the end he didn't play his best hits I think his voice is gone

An amazing concert! Time travel has never been sweeter. Steve Winwood and his band are undoubtedly from another planet! If you get a chance to see them, take it and you will see what playing music is all about!! Never really heard of the wood brothers much before they opened up that night and I am now a huge fan, these guys are incredible, I would love to see them headline back in Vancouver soon, in the meantime I'll buy all their music and watch them on youtube!

    Steve Winwood still has it...

by djwells on 2012-11-15Orpheum Theatre - Vancouver

I have seen many performers of Steve's era and a good portion of them should have hung it up long ago. Not so with Steve, his voice is still fantastic, no strain, loss of range etc. His band was also fantastic. I had not heard of Richard Bailey before and it only took about half of a song to realize what an amazing drummer he is. I will be looking for more of his work. In all one of the best classic performers I have seen to date. I hope he hits Vancouver on a tour with Clapton.

Good musicians marred by a very poor sound mix

by Stereosage on 2012-11-15Orpheum Theatre - Vancouver

Steve Winwood played songs from all phases of his musical career, playing Hammond B3, guitar and mandolin. My wife and I both found the show was marred by a very poor sound mix. I forwarded this comment to his booking agent. Steve's vocals were often lost in the mix and the drums' sound level was way too high and frequently drowned out the guitar and the rest of the band. Still, we enjoyed the show. Steve has kept up his musical chops and had a group of very capable musicians with him.
