About

After forming in 1961 in Chicago, Illinois, while in high school, Styx steadily toured and expanded from a three-piece to a quintet during the 60s, signing with local record label Wooden Nickel Records in 1972, and releasing their self-titled debut that year. 1973’s Styx II and The Serpent Is Rising followed, as well as 1974’s Man of Miracles, further refining their output as they transitioned from straight-forward rock n roll into a more progressive rock, incorporating psychedelic flourishes and experimental structuring, as well as hard rock guitars, powerful ballads and theatrical elements. They signed with A&M Records, releasing Equinox in 1975, and subsequently 1976’s Crystal Ball and 1977’s The Grand Illusion, their breakout album that sold over 3 million copies propelled by singles Come Sail Away and Fooling Yourself. In 1981, Styx released Paradise Theatre, a concept album chronicling the fictional rise and fall of the Chicago theatre, which became their fourth consecutive triple-platinum album, reached #1 on the Billboard charts, and spawned five singles, including top ten hits The Best of Times and Too Much Time on My Hands. Next was 1983’s full-fledged rock opera Kilroy Was Here, which featured synthesizer and vocoder-driven Mr. Roboto and the power ballad Don’t Let It End. Following a half-decade separation in the 80s and a brief break-up in the 90s, Styx’s 1996 tour Return to Paradise was a success, and since then have continued releasing albums and satisfying ticket holders at concerts around the world with the likes of Def Leppard, Foreigner and Boston.

    Enjoyable but tweaks needed

by Jmmc5168@gmail.com on 2022-11-20Northern Alberta Jubilee Auditorium - Edmonton

First, Nancy Wilson was a big disappointment. Unprepared, no stage help, the whole band seemed disinterested, she and her lead singer couldnt harmonize and didnt blend well. It was a relief to both the band and audience when she left the stage. That lost 2 stars for us. Styx was amazing. Energetic. Youthful. Fantastic. Where it lost another star for us is that the music blasted out of amps way too large for the Jubilee Auditorium and became distorted and difficult to hear dispite the smaller venue that generally has excellent concert sound. The issue is, is bands like Styx can no longer fill a stadium and want to play at venues like the the Jubilee Auditorium, they need to be prepared to adjust their ampage and volume so their sound doesn't distort and is pleasurable for their audience, who are no longer teenagers.

    Styx revival!!!

by DonnyBoy on 2022-11-01Abbotsford Centre - Abbotsford

I was a bit hesitant at first sans the former lead singer. But I have to admit Gowan is a nice fit and with songs of his own available it made for a fun jog of the memory banks. The music was very good. The energy was very good. Tommy still rocks a guitar and the overall group dynamic was fun all night. Nancy Wilson’s Heart was nice but at a different level for sure. But we did get a patented leg kick!!!

    Great performances

by Chinbopper on 2022-10-29Northern Alberta Jubilee Auditorium - Edmonton

Both Nancy Wilson and Styx performed fabulously. The musicianship and vocals were superb. Why only 4 stars? The missing star is for the lousy mix. Often the background vocals overpowered the lead vocals. Sometimes the bass was missing. If the mix was decent, it would have been an easy 5.

    Styx/Heart

by Cheetah on 2022-10-26Brandt Centre - Regina

I thought that The Heart component of the concert was lacking and I was disappointed that more of Heart songs weren’t played. Styx was a great, polished, band and nice to see the professionalism

    Great Show Too Many Screens!

by Q-tar on 2022-10-24Canada Life Centre - Winnipeg

Right from the first note it felt great to be back in the Canada Life Centre for a Rockin' Roll Show! We all felt that the Wilson Show was equally as good as the Sthe Styx headliner. Unfortunately I had three screens in my face distracting me from what was going on LIVE and in person on stage. the woman in front of me live streamed the entire show to a friend by a phone in her left hand plus she was recording the entire show for herself with a phone in her right hand. Her partner was also taking video of some choice songs. He was holding his phone right up in front of my face, not to interrupt what he was seeing of course. no problem destroying my experience. if someone wants to take a quick picture from there seat, no problem but if pay for a seat, drive in from Selkirk to watch a show, buy food etc. and i continue to have to have screens in my face I'll just stay home and watch my big screen TV. I like to have my phone with me just as much as the next guy but in this situation, ban the dam phones so people can live in the moment and enjoy the concert. PS. Looking for KISS, Queen, Tom Jones, Genesis, The Stones, The Who and the return of Ringo Star.

    Great Show

by Doggy on 2022-10-23Brandt Centre - Regina

If you like the style of Styx, you will love this show. They are energetic for an older band and fun. Nancy Wilson's Heart are a great opening act. We loved the show and wished it could have been longer!
