Supertramp. Superb show at Rexall Place June 5th!

by DaveM on 2011-07-22Rexall Place - Edmonton

I will not list the extensive set list here as that is available online. What a show! They played everything a Supertramp fan could possibly want to hear and did it all very well. With 3 of the original band members present augmented by session musicians and back up singers, the entire performance was tight and very well presented. The guys singing some of Hodgson's songs sounded eerily similar. Sound-wise, there was one brief damped feedback from Davis's mic, but there were no other issues. At times the session was almost Jazz-like with John Heliwell's saxophone and clarinet. The harmonica and melodica parts were amazing, as were Heliwell's sax parts. Davis was in good voice and played the grand piano and Kurzweil (?) synthesizer extraordinarily well. Some of the visuals were a little dated, but most could not have been bettered. From row 10, the entire experience was spellbinding! Their music provides a commentary on life, love and loss. Few groups do that so well. People in their 60's were in the left isle with the younger folks dancing in the right isle. Beautiful to see so many people of different ages and backgrounds enjoying this beautiful music. The audience gave two standing ovations at the end of the set and then after the encore. I left the show with a huge smile on my face and was humming the songs for 2 weeks or more afterwards. This concert was definitely worth the money. It was not an expensive ticket and I would have paid more. I have seen so many reviews in the papers and online by people who say that it was not the same without Roger Hodgson (missed his visit in March - poor advertising). I have to be honest and say that I cannot completely agree. They may have been a little hesitant in Victoria, but they were fantastic on stage in Edmonton. Go and see them, you will not be disappointed.

    Surprisingly good

by SuperFan10 on 2011-06-27Rogers Arena (formerly General Motors Place) - Vancouver

Given their age and that Hodgson was not there, I did not expect Supertramp to live up to there former glory. But Rick Davies was fantastic on piano, John Helliwell was great and the new youngsters contributed fresh energy to a wonderful nostalgic concert. Why aren't there bands like this anymore?

Even without the original singer, it was an amazing evening of fantastic music.

    Supertramp 'cover band' was super

by captdrlarry on 2011-06-17Scotiabank Saddledome - Calgary

9 musicians and only one from the original Supertramp band made me question if I am listening to Supertramp or an incredibly talented cover band playing Supertramp tunes. Nonetheless, the music was great, the crowd was totally into the performance and it was a couple of hours well worth our time. I'd see them again.

    supertramp a solid show

    by mason123 on 2011-06-17Rexall Place - Edmonton

being a fan since i was first introduced in 1974 i was not dissapointed. sure there were a few areas where it would have been perfect to have roger along but we gotta move on. the performance and stage presence was spot onif your're a SUPERTRAMP fan you would be cheating yourself by passing on this tour. just hope i can get another shot at it. the only down side to the show was that the staff allowed poachers to come from the back of the floor and crowd into your space. wound up with an impaired person on my lap twice

Supertramp made our 30th Anniversary perfect!

by Fairydust on 2011-06-16Molson Canadian Amphitheatre - Toronto

So many times since the late 70's we've hoped the stars would align so that we could see this amazing band and it finally happened! My husband and I got to finally watch this wonderful group play live at the Molson Amphitheatre in Toronto and we couldn't think of a more wonderful way to celebrate our 30th Anniversary. Supertramp was everything we'd hoped for and more! Two solid hours of their unique music plus an encore, what more could anyone ask for.

    Supertramp still has it!

by Kris4815 on 2011-06-16Molson Canadian Amphitheatre - Toronto

Two words: Incredible music. This is exactly what live music is for: every song deviated from the recorded track through phenomenal saxophone, trumpet, guitar and piano riffs. Watching these guys improv their old (and some newer) material was so refreshing and fun! After all these years, Rick Davies has still got it -- as both a vocalist and pianist. The only downside was Roger Hodgson's absence, but the group made do with Jesse Siebenberg and Gabe Dixon put in the rotation with Rick to hit those high notes. Loved the Breakfast in America album favourites: "Take the Long Way Home," "Goodbye Stranger," "Breakfast in America" and of course, "Logical," among others. Also, lots of cheers also for "Bloody Well Right" from Crime of the Century, along with "Dreamer" and "School" included in the encore. Glad to see the group still going strong. One of my favourite concerts.

    Disappointing

by Poolgirlie on 2011-06-16Molson Canadian Amphitheatre - Toronto

Show started 1/2 hour late. Played 2 songs that I knew in the first hour and a few more in the second hour. Lots of songs that most did not recognize so everyone just sat and listened. Not the same without the original lead singer. The venue was good. Overall though, I was disappointed with the show.
