About

From his early days performing on Canadian radio to his current status as one of The Great White North's most revered jazz veterans, virtuoso pianist Brian Browne has remained a national treasure. Browne is largely self-taught, a surprising fact that makes his jaw-dropping keyboard skills all the more impressive at his live shows with the Brian Browne Trio. Whether they're bopping along to the bounce of "Shiny Stockings" or falling into the mesmerizing groove of "Girl Talk", Browne and his band always bring plenty of experience, passion, and intuitive playing technique to the stage on their captivating tours.

BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT:

Brian Browne was born in Montreal but he spent his teens living in Ottawa, a city that served as both a testing ground and a launch pad for his jazz career. After teaching himself to play the piano he began performing locally, and by age 18 he was gigging professionally throughout Ottawa and Toronto. He rose to national prominence in the early '60s as a featured act on jazz radio programs like "Adventures in Rhythm" and "The Browne Beat", his namesake show for the CBC. His impressive performances with The Brian Browne Trio continued to fuel his success, and in the mid-‘60s the group became the house band of the popular Canadian music variety show The River In. Over the course of his decade-spanning career Browne has released 11 albums, shared the stage with legends like Errol Garner and Bill Evans, and received the BMI Song of the Year award for his 1971 composition "Morning, Noon and Nighttime, too".  A seasoned and revered live performer, Browne continues to delight with his trio on tour.

    A magical evening

by Hammondguy1951 on 2014-11-18National Arts Centre / Centre national des Arts - Ottawa

It was an evening to remember. Brian and his world class drummer Terry Clarke and bassist Neil Swainson sounded like they were a trio that has played together for years. The ambiance of the Fourth Stage was warm and friendly. The crowd were obviously long time supporters of Brian as they applauded long and loud at the end of each tune. To say that Brian Browne is a Canadian musical icon is an understatement. His playing is musical, filled with lots of nuance and many twists and turns throughout the evening, I know Brian and he values his audience so he plays music that is accessible and audience friendly. Classics like Satin Doll, What the World Needs Now, Scarborough Fair, and Ode to Billy Joe made up part of a diverse set list. There were also some great blues flavoured tunes and a gorgeous bass-nova song as well. The other part of the show that I really enjoyed was Brian's interaction with the audience, the man has a wicked sense of humour which he displayed when he stepped up to the mic between songs to talk a little bit about the next tune or just talk about music and his career.
