    Great Reception

by Lindarae on 2013-06-12Elgin Theatre - Toronto

The whole event by the Globe was excellent. Good service in the lobbly, excellent seating, wonderful reception. The wine and food flowed, lots of tables and seating, not overly crowded, could hear and see the guest. The orchestra was superb.

The Giancomo Variations was a theatrical joke.

by CanadianScouser on 2013-06-12Elgin Theatre - Toronto

What a disappointment!!!! I should have left with the 1/4 of the audience at the intermission, if not sooner, but was kept in my seat by the fortune I had wasted on the tickets. The acting was mediocre, the orchestra was amature, the signing inconsistent, the story line impossible to follow (and that's with three of us trying to figure it out). I am shocked that John Malkovich has attached his name to this production. For two and a half hours I struggled to understand the purpose of this production and three days later I am still baffled and have come to the conclusion that this was a money grab. Unfortunately I read the reviews too late. Initially I wondered why the production was only slated for three days but after thirty minutes, I understood, had the run been any longer, word would have gotten out and theater goers would have been boycotting the production. Even Mr. Malkoich has been reported as saying it is still a work in progress, and if this is the case then it should still be in review theaters and tickets should be $50, it shouldn't be showcased as a proper performance. Added to that, the deceptive advertising leading one to believe they were going to see Casanova, unless you read the fine print that indicated it was a Giancomo Variation. The production starts off with Casanova committing suicide, the problem is that Mr. Malkovich enters the stage exhibiting the symptoms of one experiencing a stroke, now if other patrons recognized this I cannot be sure but for me and my party we did, and so it was very disturbing when he collapsed and there was a lull, then the stage hands entered and brought on the gurney and someone on stage went to his side and said "John?", giving more credit to the idea that Mr. Malkovich had just experienced a stroke. Then, the orchestra starts up and we discover it's all part of the show. It was all in poor taste, and if they wanted it part of the act, they should have stayed in character and called him GIancomo, not John. So after, getting over the shock of having just witnessed a man collapse on stage of an apparent stroke, the show had nowhere else to go but up, sadly the performance went downhill from there. The inconsistencies in storyline and the timeline changes, the singers inabilities to project their voices while signing, the mumbled lines and even Giancomo's final speech seeming as if Mr. Malkovich aware that the production was a faileur, had started to add lib, all culminated into a failure. All in all the worst theater production I have seen in my many years as a theater goer. If I could get a refund it would only somewhat lessen the blow of the experience.

    Simply beautiful!

by RuthieMG on 2013-06-11Elgin Theatre - Toronto

Amazing performance! The stage was beautifully put together and the storyline, although portraying past and present simultaneously, was fluid and cohesive, and the adaptation of the music to the play was breathtaking. Lastly, John Malkovich carried us across the spectre - from fear to laughter, to tabu discomfort to love and understanding towards Casanova. Bravo!

    Casanova was not memorable!!

by Jutta on 2013-06-11Elgin Theatre - Toronto

Almost left at intermission.........Story line was confusing, John Malkovich was so so (he should not try to sing!!) and although the music was quite lovely, the acoustics for opera were terrible at the Elgin Winter Garden.

Good Show Overall, Glad I Went But...

John Malkovich was incredible, a phenomenal actor who gave depth and emotional complexity to his character. The rest of the cast were very talented as well, particularly in their lush singing. The whole show was romantic, tragic, sexy, sensual, and well done from costumes to sets, from beginning to end, but it lacked the spark required to really catch my interest. No complaints about it, just not something groundbreaking or particularly engaging. Entertaining, well done, top-notch piece of art but not my thing.

    Boring

by Cels on 2013-06-11Elgin Theatre - Toronto

I was looking forward to the performance, but I found it very hard to follow. The story went all over the place. I was disappointed. As my friend said, it was an expensive snooze fest.
