    Whammer Jammer Party Detroit Style

by Bluesrockdog on 2011-08-21DTE Energy Music Theatre - Clarkston

    J. Geils is a legendary band that has been around for over forty years. Part of the that legend was forged in Detroit, the band's adopted second home. From the opening notes to the last few ringing ones that guided everyone home, it was a legendary show. The band rocked the house for over two hours including two encores. It was a typical J. Geils concert with nearly every song sending everyone into a dancing frenzy. No matter how many times you've heard those songs they never fail to ignite the dance fever in everyone.

    J Geils still have it....

by FloydfromRedstoneLake on 2011-08-21DTE Energy Music Theatre - Clarkston

Thirty nine years ago, half a dozen guys did our usual trip to the cottage in Haliburton, Ontario. We brought a stereo (Dynaco amp, AR turntable, Klipsh speakers) to party away, but....forgot the records! However, one of the guys bought a few on the way up, one being the brand new "Full House", and five or six more. We played J Geils for 48 hours in a row, literally. I could "air guitar" (and "air" every other instrument) every note of that album.... A friendship was forged. We followed and saw them everywhere we could, but mostly in Toronto. One time they backed up the Who. We saw J Geils and left... We were diehards (or stupid). I was supposed to take my best friend, one of the original cottagers, to the DTE Music Theatre concert two days ago, but his sister, 57 years old, died of cancer the night before. I took my wife (Oh my God, that bowling ball. It's my wife). I was pretty down when I showed up, still thinking of my friend's pain. When the band started to play, the memories were overwhelming....I hadn't seen them live in over 25 years and they sounded as good, or better, than they did before. The sound was great, the seats (although we never sat down) were great, and the atmosphere was literally like a party of friends. After about 5 incredible songs, and possibly influenced by the beer and other things, the pain turned to joy...(that sounded lame, but I'm not a great writer) They played "almost" every great song, from every album, with a few exceptions, but it was Peter Wolf's connection with the audience that was so impressive. He's a good story teller, of course, but it sounds sincere. It's also nice to see the whole gang "smiling", which looks like they're having fun. I think they were. Sue and I had fun, and it was a much needed break, and like a mini holiday from Toronto. They played for about two and a half hours straight (mini breaks and two encores). I felt bad my friend couldn't be there, but I'll try again sometime. The band usually plays MA, NY and other areas of New England, and it's not that far for us, so maybe I'll make the effort again. It's worth the drive, and the rewards are priceless. We only live once, and regardless of the rumours, I think even they will be retired when I move off to heaven.....See them while you can.

    As Great as Ever!

by HRoark on 2010-08-23DTE Energy Music Theatre - Clarkston

This show was special, as the tickets were my 21st anniversary surprise gift to my wife and I. She had never seen J. Geils live and I had always said "they are the best live band ever!" There was no dissappointment in this show either, she LOVED it! Just to be able to enjoy one of my all time favorite groups with her at DTE AKA Pine Knob made it a night I will never forget. The perfomance was as high energy as always and they just make you feel your apart of the show. They are all extraordinary performers and musicians. They sounded just as good as the first time I saw them at Cobo 30 + years ago! The local extra's they included in the show, High School band, 3 backup singers, 2 trombones & 2 Sax's were spot on! The respect & tributes Peter made to all his fellow band members, support mucisians & singers and their favorite past blues artists that helped them was just pure class! First concert I have attended where NOONE sat down the whole night! I just want to say thanks to all of them for the priveledge of being there!
