    Better than Ever!

    by Aryana on 2023-09-27

At MacPherson Theatre in Victoria BC tonight the Manhatten Transfer was better than ever with more complex arrangements than I've heard before. They have the vocal range and power they had 50 years ago and a new member who is a perfect fit. Clearly they wanted to keep singing to an audience that didn't want them to leave. One of the most memorable performances of my life.

No more old bands for me.

by fredmel on 2012-04-17Centennial Concert Hall - Winnipeg

    1) They were missing one of the members of he group & had hire a replacement. So this was not "The Manhattan Transfer". 2) Each of the group members sang a solo from their personal repertoire. I paid to see "The Manhattan Transfer" perform the music that they are famous for, not some unknown tunes that I have never heard before. 3) Only came back for 1 encore. 4) Old voices loosing their range, which is why they did not sing many of their most popular hits.

    Manhattan Transfer awesome!

by debbibee on 2010-06-07The Centre In Vancouver For Performing Arts - Vancouver

MT was awesome. My husband and I are long time fans. Their skill and synergy is not only entertaining it is phenominal. If only the top musicians of today are still able to perform 40 years after they start...well enough said!! I would recommend this group to all who are inspired by great doo wop, jazz and just great entertainment. The theater was not a sell out what a shame for those of you who hesitated. You missed a great show.

    Sorry Janis was ill

by KayGee2 on 2010-05-31The Centre In Vancouver For Performing Arts - Vancouver

The evening was wonderful. Like me, they have aged by 25 years but their voices are still as good as 1985!!! I am pretty sure that as the evening went on Janis Segal was not well. She explained that she had torn her contact and could only see out of 1 eye. If she is like me that is a perfect set up for a migraine, if that is so..........I feel the pain. Each did a solo from new personal albums and they were outstanding,,,,,,,,,, It was an evening to remember especially sitting in row 2!!!! What a wonderful surprise!

Still Amazing after 40 Years Together

by 77Strat on 2010-05-31The Centre In Vancouver For Performing Arts - Vancouver

The Manhattan Transfer is the premiere vocal jazz group of all time. They have set the standard that all groups of this genre adhere to. Their performance at the Centre shows that they still have the vocal chops, the stage presence and most importantly the music to offer. They also were backed by a very solid and steady band who could have easily done their own show. This tour is to promote their latest album The Chick Corea Songbook and they began the show with a vocalese version of the Return to Forever standard Spain. Their version of the tune was slower than what you may expect because normally this is taken at a blistering tempo by many instrumental groups but their rendition stands up. They also performed 500 Miles High (originally sang by Flora Purim) and the lesser known One Step Closer. They performed their classics like Java Jive, Route 66 and Tuxedo Junction and each member had a solo spot and each did an admirable job on their own but they are stronger as a group. Janis Siegal is probably the strongest singer in the group and she is amazing when she scats especially when she emulates a muted trumpet. Tim Hauser the founder and leader has amazing vocal chops and when he sings words on a tune that was originally an instrumental he sings with exact precision like the instrument itself and it can a mouthful at times. Allan Paul is I think the charismatic frontman and Cheryl Bentyne is a delightful presence. They closed off the show with the vocal version of Weather Report's Birdland which itself is a vocal jazz standard and they do not miss a beat or lose a rhythm on this one. Their backing band led by their long time pianist and musical director keeps them swinging all night. This was a show to remember and you do not hear a lot of good Vocal Jazz groups playing in this town too often. We need more groups like this coming to town but we got the best one on this night.

    Too few songs!

by Anonymous on 2010-05-30The Centre In Vancouver For Performing Arts - Vancouver

At 1 hour and forty minutes, I thought that the concert was a little short! Unfortunately they were promoting their new album and performed way too many songs from it and way too few songs from their extensive repertoire. It would have been really nice to hear more of the songs that has made them so very famous. There voices are as good as ever if not the best yet, truly great talents. I am a great fan (since the very beginning) so I would go and see them no matter what, but I would not recommend this concert to anyone who is just starting to get into them. Also, there were no tour books or souvenirs at all?! On a side note, I was extremely disappointed in the venue's choice of refreshments at the bar. We live in a province that has some of the very best wines in the world (award winning!) and all they offer is some South African swill? Someone is making very poor decisions when it is a perfect opportunity to showcase what we have to offer, especially with all the great exposure that our wine industry has garnered from the Olympics. They better clean up their act!

Manhattan Impresses, but does not connect.

by CorporateClient on 2010-05-30The Centre In Vancouver For Performing Arts - Vancouver

Old time fan, but I wanted to hear Operator OR, A Nightingale Sang in Barkley Square OR Gloria, but got none. Love the Jazz Scat, but not 3 Chick Corea's remakes. They dazzle with Jazz prowess, their professionalism impresses, but with a little POP they could have been a lot more entertaining. After the first 30 min of Jazz skill, entertain me with changing the pace, then close me off with your hits. I think they mailed this performance in since it was not sold out. Rob

    Exquisite Elegance

by jtk55 on 2010-05-30The Centre In Vancouver For Performing Arts - Vancouver

What a night to remember! The glorious, mesmerizing, captivating experience that was the Manhattan Transfer's performance in Vancouver filled my soul, buoyed my spirit and left me invigorated and grateful. The intricacies and delicate harmonies of this truly extraordinary group of vocal musicians and the solid, silky tones of the instrumentalists made it all a fabulous trip down "Route 66" and beyond. They took us on an exclusive, exquiste holiday of which I will remember and cherish always. The song choices were a perfect harmony of vintage from their incredible 40 years together and newly recorded pieces. Together, they are magic and solo they are supreme musical beings! I am thankful I was introduced to Manhattan Transfer about 35 years ago, by my brother, whom I was able to share last night's concert with, along with his wife for their 25th Anniversary celebration. The joy the Manhattan Transfer has continuously brought to me over the years is immeasurable and the memory of this concert leaves me humbled in a profound and wonderous way. A true night of exquisite elegance and celebration it was! The only thing better would be to meet them in person! I do know that the next time I sing "Tuxedo Junction" with my little band, I will have an extra smile in my vocal tones coming directly from my heart and memory of the wonder of this night!
