    Delightful

by PatBaz on 2014-01-07National Arts Centre / Centre national des Arts - Ottawa

I attended this without even knowing this story, accompanying my wife who is a big fan of the Sound of Music. I came out of it, humming the tunes from the show.

Sound of Music had some great actors

by LSueR on 2014-01-07National Arts Centre / Centre national des Arts - Ottawa

We enjoyed the performance and judged the acting as very good. It is hard not to compare to the movie version, but we tried hard not to! I was impressed with the clever staging - eg. using the real audience as the audience for the the singing festival, and having a Hitler-lookalike 'Nazi' sitting a row away from you. Very well done, indeed. The casting was really good with 2 exceptions, which distracted us somewhat. The 2 Von Trapp 'boys' were clearly not -- one was a girl, one was much older than the character. Their acting was fine but we kept watching them for the wrong reasons. Kudos to Maria and the Mother Superior nun - i enjoyed watching them every time they were on stage. And of course, the music was wonderful. LSR

The Sound of Music brought back memories

by CarolL on 2014-01-06National Arts Centre / Centre national des Arts - Ottawa

My daughter and I attended the musical, she and I have always enjoyed the movie and enjoyed the musical as much. For my it brought back the memory of seeing the movie for the first time in 1968 the last movie I saw before my father died in 1969. I love the humor that was added and the actors were amazing.

The Sound of Music was absolutely phenomenal!!!

by ChrissyN on 2014-01-06National Arts Centre / Centre national des Arts - Ottawa

Growing up, The Sound of Music was one of my favourite films. As soon as I heard the live show was coming to the NAC, I knew I wanted to attend and take my two teenage daughters. We were definitely not disappointed! The production was extremely well done - beyond my expectations. My girls loved it so much that they wanted to see it a 2nd time! I especially appreciated that the ensemble cast were primarily local actors. I was proud to see that we have so much talent here!

The Sound of Music was brilliantly done.

by LizzyIzzy on 2014-01-05National Arts Centre / Centre national des Arts - Ottawa

It's hard to take a classic, especially one as well known as The Sound of Music, and make it your own...but that's exactly what this cast and crew has done! The story stayed true to the original but had enough new ideas to make the production interesting. Eliza Jane Scott's voice is stunning!

    Sound of music was ho-hum

by Bird9 on 2014-01-05National Arts Centre / Centre national des Arts - Ottawa

I found this production at the NAC poorly cast. First and foremost, Captain Von Trapp was an ok singer, but just didn't embody the part. He didnt have a commanding presence that one would expect from this character. He had a nervous twitch on his left had every time he spoke. It surprised me that the director didn't pick up on this and adjust the actors posture to hide it. My eye was drawn to his hand constantly moving. The children were weakly cast as well, other than Liesl, who was fantastic. Kurt was also poorly cast. Maria had a fabulous voice, and was well cast in her part. I also liked the simplicity of the sets, and the flow from set to set.
