TOKYO POLICE CLUB IN CONCERT:

Upbeat Canadian indie quartet Tokyo Police Club has been getting wallflowers dancing with their post-punk-inspired sound and high-spirited live performances for the past decade. The group’s concerts are a nonstop barrage of catchy melodies, and sing-along-worthy choruses, and their outsize charm and infectious energy fill the room every time they take the stage. Earworms like “Hot Tonight” and “Your English Is Good” always elicit massive cheers from the crowd, and the band responds in kind with unbridled enthusiasm as they tear through their set. Whether they’re performing songs from their 2008 debut album Elephant Shell or 2014’s Forcefield, Tokyo Police Club always rock the stage with their impressive musicianship, lively stage presence, and extensive catalog of powerful indie rock jams.

BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT:

Tokyo Police Club was formed in Toronto in 2005 from the ashes of the band Suburbia. They began playing small shows in the area, and before long word-of-mouth buzz had earned them an opening slot at the Pop Montreal Festival. A stellar performance there led to a deal with Paper Bag Records, and in 2006 the band made their debut on the label with the EP A Lesson in Crime. They followed up in 2007 with the Smith EP, and in 2008 they released their full-length debut album Elephant Shell. The record was a Top 10 hit in Canada, and also charted in the US which led to an extensive North American tour. Their 2010 sophomore album Champ was also well received, earning them three Top 20 singles on the Canadian Alternative Chart and a high-profile performance on the Late Show with David Letterman. In 2014 the band released their third album Forcefield to another round of critical and commercial success, and they continue to impress with their adrenaline-filled sets on tour.

    Great show...from Born Ruffians!

by Concert Guy on 2021-08-16CityView Drive-In - Toronto

Sadly, we didn't see Tokyo Police Club since we had the wrong start time on our ticket. Show was supposed to start at 8pm so we arrived just shortly after when Born Ruffians were about to go on. Turns out TPC played at 7pm and BF were the last to go on. We had no idea until everyone started to leave after BF played. Thought TPC were headlining so we were there early to catch the opener. Alas, we were wrong. That said, BF were GREAT and the sound was amazing. Just wish Ticketmaster gave us the heads up there was a schedule change/swap for the bands.

    Exceeded Expectations

    by TashB on 2021-08-16CityView Drive-In - Toronto

Tokyo Police Club and Born Ruffians sounded great, the venue was unique and comfortable, and the event was well-organized. I hope that CityView Drive-In continues to host concerts long after covid restrictions are loosened. It was a great way to see a band.

    10/10

Drive-in concert was a first experience and I loved it! Vehicles were offset in their spaces so no one was parked directly in front of you, there was space, people were out and moving and grooving. Loved it.

    Excellent Bands!

    by Buddy on 2021-08-15CityView Drive-In - Toronto

Tokyo Police Club and Born Ruffians are both extremely talented bands. Born Ruffians have the edge in their creation of the number of new lyrics and their variety of musical styles. The venue was superb for the COVID restrictions that exist. The bands probably were not as aware of the enthusiasm of the crowd but each grouping in the parking lot were very involved in their applause, cheering and honking!!!!!!! Do it again please!!

TPC put on a GREAT show!

by JamieSS on 2014-12-26The Danforth Music Hall - Toronto

The band was full of energy and intense. A small intimate venue, a great band, a light show and great acoustics made the evening dynamic. Well done guys.

Fantastic evening with Tokyo Police Club

by Oldestpersonintheroom on 2014-12-08Molson Canadian Studio at Hamilton Place - Hamilton

Tokyo Police Club met my expectations. I loved the music and really enjoyed seeing them in an intimate venue Said The Whale was great! I was more familiar with their music than i thought i would be so i really enjoyed them. They were entertaining on stage and visually appealing. Pack A.D. was good. Although i wasn't really a fan of their musical style, it was great to see them live. Excellent Value for $37.00 all in!!

    Tokyo Police Club

by grizzlyzach on 2013-01-06Sound Academy - Toronto

Awesome show! The opening acts were great. Topanga had great energy, but wasn't crazy about all their songs! Hollerado is always a fun band to see live! The new songs sound great and all the confetti is really fun. stef56822's review was really lame because they opened by playing their whole A Lesson In Crime EP which was the FIRST EP/any music that they released ever. It was really cool to see/listen to that and any real fan of TPC is familiar with their first EP. TPC played an awesome set and the new songs sound good too! The crowd was pretty wild, but everyone was singing a long and it was was a great time! I've seen TPC a few times an I have to say that they never disappoint!

Opening acts were lame... Do you remember those crap bands that play in a garage...they don't get better on a big stage.

    Average Setlist

    by steff56822 on 2012-12-17Sound Academy - Toronto

This was my third TPC concert and I have to say that it was my least favourite. I understand that a band wants to play their new music for their fans - and I love hearing new music at live shows - but, if your album has not been released (and therefore no one could know any of the songs)..... DO NOT play literally 30 minutes of new music in a row (to start off the set!). I am a TPC fan, and in the first 30 minutes I think I recognized 1 song. The second half made up for the first - they played a great mix of songs, including some great Christmas songs. Hollerado was a lot of fun. Really enjoyed them.
