    No Malcolm? No problem!

by tjah on 2014-07-14Huntington Center - Toledo

Legends Football League. This is a sporting organization that my friends and I heard about through SI.com's Extra Mustard daily page. On that page, videos are regularly posted of angry coaches yelling at women in underwear and shoulder pads. We found this very difficult to take seriously. We were delighted to learn that Toledo - a city one country, or 3 hours away - was hosting an LFL game in two weeks. Road trip it was! This was our first trip to Toledo, and we were all pleasantly surprised by the city. The downtown core is beautiful, and we had no trouble finding a place to eat. We ate at the Blarney pub. The food was good, there were plenty of beers on tap, and it all came for a great price. On a Friday night, it was clear that the stadium for the Toledo Mudhens, Detroit's AAA baseball affiliate, was the place to be. Of course, we were instead going to the Huntington Center to watch female athletes run around in underwear. The Huntington Center is a terrific modern facility. Concessions were well-priced and lines moved quickly, and the location is fantastic. Attendance at the game was... sparse. I estimated 150-200 people in the stands. Confusingly, several of the spectators were young children. The announcers said nothing that would make the fans take this event any less seriously as a sport, but the uniforms were designed to be sexy. Children do not belong. Amusingly, there were very few souvenirs available that said "Toledo Crush". Much of the merchandise was leftover from previous years, when the team was in Cleveland. I bought a Cleveland Crush hat. I am very happy with this purchase, but I wish that there were Toledo Crush hats available instead. Toledo was thoroughly outplayed. I got the impression that this is a running league, and Toledo did a very poor job of stopping Atlanta's running game. Passing was virtually non-existent, much like how I expect the 2015 Toledo Crush to be. I would be shocked if there is another home game of the Crush in Toledo. As an experience, this was great. If my friends asked me if I wanted to go to an LFL game in my hometown next week, I would say no. But if I was asked if I wanted to go to Rochester, New York for the Rochester Crush next year, I would probably say yes. As the centerpiece of a boys' night out, this was excellent.
