    Tosca: A Good Performance

by Eccles on 2014-09-30National Arts Centre / Centre national des Arts - Ottawa

This was a good performance: some excellent moments, although not enough to raise it to the outstanding category. The main leads sang well, although the acting was not always at the same level; and the overall production was effective, although with some fussy stage business that sometimes distracted (e.g. the amount of paper that was thrown to the floor and left to litter it - with singers having to manoeuvre around it when we should have been able to focus on emotionally intense moments.

Tosca was a true enchantment !

by Yvanosos on 2014-09-16National Arts Centre / Centre national des Arts - Ottawa

I shall never forget the representation of Tosca which took place on the last Saturday (13th of September) at NAC. I was so longing to see this famous opera, and was expecting an interpretation which would marvels me, draw all my attention from its very beginning to the end. That is precisely that which happened to me. Not for a moment have I experienced weariness nor fatigue ! I was like an 8 year-old child watching his very first cartoon early on a Saturday morning after having longed for it during all the week. All was perfect, even the French translation of the opera was remarkably faithful. I could have wished no better than the place which I occupied on the balcony. And, in this connection, note that the whole hall was occupied. Only a few seats weren't on the balcony. But how inconsequential for an opera of this nature ! At length, I cannot sufficiently recommend this opera ! To whoever adores opera as myself, I say that this opera must be seen. Failing to see it would be such a mistake for such fan of opera, I tell you. I even guarantee it ! I payed $37 for the last representation for a so well-situated place on the balcony. Considering the quality of the opera, I should be willing to pay the double, even the triple to see another representation of it by the same comedians. With all my heart I am thankful for having been able to see such opera, and recommend it here ! Long live to Arts, especially plays and operas ! Yvanosos

    poor production

by Deekie on 2014-09-16National Arts Centre / Centre national des Arts - Ottawa

The singing was very good but the production was poor. The singers movements were very stilted and unnatural. It resulted in the passion and the drama being played out in the midst of a war being lost. I was disappointed in the production.

    Not what I expected

by TheEuropean on 2014-09-11National Arts Centre / Centre national des Arts - Ottawa

I sat front row in the mezzanine. Overall, I was not impressed with the performance. I was born and lived in Europe, where opera is very established, loved and cherished as a fundamental part of our culture. The singers were weak, couldn't overpower the music and couldn't hold the high pitch for more than a few seconds. They were cold, almost no emotions or sentiment. It was a shock to find that they didn't have a spare actor for Spoletta; a woman was moving on the stage while somebody was singing from the back with a microphone! Last night was the first time that my boyfriend attended an Opera, and even he immediately recognized and pointed out these shortcomings during the first intermission. I hope this disappointing first experience doesn't tarnish his view of something that can and should be such an enjoyable, emotionally moving experience. The shooting of Tosca, rather than her suicide (her voluntary act of defiance) was also a questionable choice. Finally, a note to the audience. The overall behavior of the spectators was intolerable. First, a dress code problem: when did it become acceptable to go to the opera in flip flops, cargo shorts, plaid shirts and baseball caps? In Europe the Opera is a black tie event; tuxedos and evening gowns. While I don't expect such formality in North America, you could respect the event by dressing a little nicer than you do when you go for groceries. Second, you don't applaud during the performance, ever...not until the end of the Act - and you certainly you don't shout "bravo". You break the concentration of both singers and orchestra, not to mention any emotional connection that other members of the audience may have been having with the performance. I would suggest that the production issue these basic instructions to the audience during the pre-show announcement.
