Choral Feast was a fantastic choral experience!

by Jill on 2022-11-30Orpheum Theatre - Vancouver

Beyond my expectations, which were already high! Sublime. Every choir amazing. Even the mass choir finale achieved an incredible pure blend. My first time hearing the Vancouver Youth Choir. Looking forward to more. Thank you so much for this wonderful event!

    Splendid introduction

by t on 2020-02-18Koerner Recital Hall at VAM - Vancouver

(Everything! How greedy!) I'm chipping away at seeing all the important choirs in the city and hadn't yet seen the Vancouver Chamber Choir. Was pleasantly surprised to see some familiar faces from other groups (I think Musica Intima and Elektra?). I realize this recital was a special circumstance, that being the culmination of a workshop for aspiring conductors. In the end, though, this aspect was a bonus. What a fantastic program. I'm a fan of themed programs, but there's something to be said for randomness. Great dynamic mix of old and new(ish); lovely singing--and certainly hats off to the choir to have to do so much, and such different, repertoire in a single evening. Even the banter in between sets was decidedly engaging. LOVED the Candide; never get to hear that. The single thing I didn't like was the dead sound in the room; I know, though, that this is a necessary quality for the general functions of the space. Will definitely come out to see the VCC again. Too bad there are so many Friday shows (for all the city's choirs). I'm always working!

    Uplifting!

Incredible event! Great new artistic direction. Amazing acoustics in the church. I sat up front and thrilled to distinguish each individual voice that contributed to this amazing performance. The 16th century price they performed simply lifted my soul!

amazing bass, how deep the sound

by behritone on 2018-04-08Orpheum Theatre - Vancouver

Awe-inspiring bassos. Last low C as sonorous as the first, and an audible Bflat outside of Russia. Thanks to both organizations for the many wonderful sonic spectaculars, and a live performance itself as rare as asparagus at Christmas.

Highly enjoyable evening of choral music

    by MR1944 on 2018-04-03Orpheum Theatre - Vancouver

This concert program was one of the highlights of the year for us. We have been attending the choral concerts at the Orpheum on Good Friday evenings for years now. This year's was undoubtedly one of the very best ever. It was our first time hearing the Rachmaninoff Vespers which are truly beautiful. The Fauré's Messe basse was reminiscent of his larger works, and hinted at themes from his other works. Lauridsen's Lux Aeterna was absolutely exquisite. Hauntingly gorgeous music so well performed. A Standing Ovation well-earned by Jon Washburn, the 3 choirs and the Chamber Orchestra. Couldn't have been better.

Was beautiful, but felt more somber vs. cheerful

by Madsky on 2017-12-19Orpheum Theatre - Vancouver

Maybe a better description would have helped. The songs were all in German except a few. I didn’t know any of them. Felt like I had stepped into a church vs a concert.

    chamber choir excels

by drsinc on 2016-10-24Ryerson United Church - Vancouver

Another excellent concert by the VCC. The theme of music of the Americas was well chosen and very beautifully executed. Lots of diversity in speed, timber and musical leads and it ended with a wonderfully upbeat cover of a Rankin Family favourite and a benediction-like encore. Made the 400+ km journey all worth it! Tnx!!
