Enjoyable but not like past performances

by Sakaane on 2018-04-25Southern Alberta Jubilee Auditorium - Calgary

This wasn't my first time seeing Video Games Live. Prior performances were a lot of fun and very engaging. This one lacked something... Throughout the evening I felt like there were not enough musicians or instruments on stage for the music that was being played, as if part of the audio was live and part of it was a synced backing track (percussion instruments in particular). The Kickstarter was mentioned. Once was fine. Twice as a reminder was okay. More than that... As the performance went on I felt like I was at a live TV commercial, as if pushing the Kickstarter was almost more important than giving a full performance. This detracted from the experience overall. I did like the cosplay and the videos, particularly the mashups. As for the music, they played some old favorites as well some pieces I hadn't heard before.

good but producer talked too much

by LJCaraway on 2018-04-06Orpheum Theatre - Vancouver

good but producer talked too much, his intro was almost 20 minutes? come on man, the set list wasnt as big as it could have been and this was no good reason why also, producer told people it was okay to make noise and shout and record, what happened then was some neckbeard behind me was filming the back of my head and shouting behind my ears throughout the duration of the show... was super annoying its cool to not be as strict as a symphony with regard to noise, but encouraging people to shout annoying stuff and allowing people to record is really annoying

Went with my husband (who begrudgingly came) and my kids (26-15) and they all loved it! We all had a wonderful evening together! Thank you!

    Poke' Amazing

by snelder007 on 2018-04-03Southern Alberta Jubilee Auditorium - Calgary

The show is always fantastic. Video Games Live has come to Calgary multiple times and they always put on a great show for everyone of all ages. Every year they seem to bring a different soloist or talent with them and this was no exception. Jason Paige, the original vocal for Pokemon theme song was so energetic! It was contagious! The show had a bit of repeats (Zelda, Mario) but a bunch of new ones too (Final Fantasy, Undertale) and the folks on stage did a fantastic job! Highly recommend going the next time they come back.

    Great night out

by Jperr on 2018-04-03Southern Alberta Jubilee Auditorium - Calgary

Liked the screen + symphony combo and that they mixed it up with popular and obscure. Would have liked more interesting selections of music, pretty played the well known main themes. Would have been great to have a matinee or earlier evening option

    On the decline

by DraLLoC on 2018-04-03Southern Alberta Jubilee Auditorium - Calgary

I was super pumped to be returning to Video Games Live this year after seeing it in Vancouver in 2010, however this year's show felt a bit lacklustre. Firstly, the show seemed to have transformed into a "I'm Mr. Tommy, look at me!" rather than a showcase of well orchestrated video game music compositions like before. The orchestra was good, but Tommy turned it into a wannabe rock concert that was slightly awkward and a bit embarrassing. His guitar skill was decent enough, but we didn't come to watch him play guitar... we came for the orchestra. He took the spotlight a bit too much and it left little to enjoy. Secondly, the videos that accompanied the music seemed thrown together and didn't go with the music at all. The Final Fantasy 10 video was totally stupid and took everything away from the enjoyment of the music being played. Instead, I closed my eyes for most of that part to try to salvage the rest of the song. This year's show was very much lacking in content, and it felt very rushed as if the creators knew they had a market people would buy into, and just half-assed it this time. I was pretty bored, and won't be returning. Sorry VGL. :(

ONCE AGAIN VIDEO GAME MUSIC AT ITS FINEST!!!

by avatarius on 2018-04-02Northern Alberta Jubilee Auditorium - Edmonton

This is the 3rd time I've attended Video Games Live symphony at Edmonton Jubilee. At every show, Tommy Tallarico puts on a great show with his enthusiasm and outgoing personality. The music he composes are very exciting and enjoyable and interacts with the multitudes of video game scenes it commemorates to. This year, he went all out by asking his fans to suggest different styles of gaming music and changed up the way the show interacts with the crowd. Overall, it was an uniquely different show than previous years and therefore, made it a wonderful listen. Best part is that he always has a special guest on tour with him and that he partnered with local businesses to help promote the show. I highly recommend this to any gamers out there and to all who enjoy symphonic music in general.

My 5th and probably last time

by TommyK on 2018-04-02Northern Alberta Jubilee Auditorium - Edmonton

They mentioned jumping the shark during the set. When a video game concert encores with a TV show theme. To me that’s jumping the shark.
