WEEN IN CONCERT:

From joke-rock heroes to experimental weirdos, Ween left no stone unturned in their 25 years of tongue-in-cheek sonic exploration before parting ways in 2012. The band’s cult following dreamed of a reunion, and in late 2015 their wish was granted when Gene and Dean Ween teamed up once again to bring their weird and wild sounds back to stages everywhere. Since the band's return, audiences have eaten up their impressive musicianship, off-the-wall humor, and eclectic catalog of fan favorites like “L.M.L.Y.P.”, “Bumblebee”, and “Push th’ Little Daises”.  Whether they’re putting their idiosyncratic twist on classic rock bravado, honky tonk country, or Prince’s “Minneapolis sound”, the two always manage to turn their diverse influences into something that can only be described as Ween—and that’s exactly what ticket buyers want.

BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT:

Ween began as a series of tape machine experiments made by New Hope, PA natives Aaron Freeman and Mickey Melchiondo—otherwise known as Gene and Dean Ween. Starting in 1984 the duo began performing along to pre-recorded backing tracks, which they eventually converted into a series of late ‘80s cassette releases. After developing a cult following with performances at venues like Trenton, NJ’s famed City Gardens, the group attracted the attention of Twin/Tone Records, which commissioned the group’s 1990 debut GodWeenSatan: The Oneness. Ween jumped to major label Elektra for 1993’s Pure Guava and began to tour tirelessly, ultimately becoming one of the biggest cult bands to emerge in the ‘90s. Despite their success, Freeman walked away from the group in 2012 to deal with his drug and alcohol abuse. Ween thrilled fans in 2015 when they announced that a refocused and refreshed Freeman would be joining them for several live performances. While the reunion has fans excited to hear old favorites, devoted listeners are just as eager to see if Ween returns to the studio to release their first album in nearly a decade.

Gener was wasted, they've been good every other time I've seen them but this show was brutal, I left, won't be going back...

Sure Ween could have done better.....

by Shauner on 2011-01-27Queen Elizabeth Theatre - Vancouver

Sure Ween could have played a better show, especially if Gene wasn't wasted on some thing. But they still played some songs very well. Overall I enjoyed the concert but I'm not a true die hard Ween fan. If I were, I would have been greatly disappointed. Not just that some of the performances were weak but that Gene didn't seem to care what anyone thought about his performance or he was so wasted he couldn't tell when he was messing up. Either way some people paid a lot of money to see the show and traveled from all over Canada to see them and they were let down. I really think that Ween should do some kind of make up concert because the potential for greatness is there.

A bad Ween show is still pretty good.

by ProfessorNutbutter on 2011-01-27Queen Elizabeth Theatre - Vancouver

A Ween performance is like sex: when it's good, it's REALLY good. When it's bad...it's still pretty good! Ween's Jan. 24 show in Vancouver was a bit of a train wreck. Over the first few songs it became clear that Gene was high out of his mind. His voice was unusually bad, along with his ability to remember lyrics and guitar parts. During the second hour, things went downhill fast: Gene spent several songs trying to tune his guitar, and spent several other songs on the floor, mumbling into the mic, while his bandmates rocked out beside him. The band did their best to keep the show from unraveling, but eventually they gave up and walked out, leaving Gene to play, or attempt to play, the last few songs by himself. The show was bad by Ween standards, but it would be unfair if I didn't mention that the rest of the band was tight as ever (Dean's guitar work being a particular highlight), and the crowd still got a 2-hour show with some truly awesome moments. "Gabrielle" and "Piss Up a Rope" were highlights for me. Like I said, a "bad" Ween show is still pretty damn good! I've seen Ween a number of times before, and I know that Monday's show was far from typical. Based on the shows I've seen before, I would still recommend a Ween show to anyone, and I would still see them again myself. And a quick response to any Ween fan who says "it's Ween - you should expect this sort of thing": Gene's condition was so bad that the band themselves walked out. That says it all.

    what a waste of time

by tuxedojack on 2011-01-26Queen Elizabeth Theatre - Vancouver

This was my first time seeing Ween, it was sooooo bad. I don't know what happened to make the whole band leave and not come back, which made the show just end to a dead stop. i was bored, annoyed and in shock of how bad it as. the only good thing about the show was the david bowie and motorhead cover.. I want a refund.

Weens show for me was quite good.Gene was kinda out of it and that ruined it for some. But based on reputation I didn't expect anything different. At times the show was great.Other times kinda iffy. But I have listened to them for 15 years and this was the first time I had a chance to see them so I was happy.

gene was too drunk and the band abandoned him by the end. There was no Encore

Gene was very drunk (or high, likely both)

by rawkbass on 2011-01-26Queen Elizabeth Theatre - Vancouver

It was obvious right away that something was wrong with Gene. Forever tuning his guitar and forgetting the words to the songs. Dean and the band just played around him or without him until they couldn't take it anymore and left. Gene then played by himself and despite being off key, it had it's own special vibe. That was until he soloed, by himself, in a manner that made Neil Young sound like Eddie Van Halen. As a big Ween fan and a former touring musician it was both fascinating and hilarious to watch it all unravel. I've seen Ween twice before and both times they were excellent. That is why I said I would recommend it again. I feel terrible for anyone there who was seeing Ween for the first time. A memorable show for sure.

    Ween back on the scotchguard?

by WeenoVision on 2011-01-26Queen Elizabeth Theatre - Vancouver

WOW... I wish I was as loaded as they were that night! I have seen many Ween shows and this was by far the worst proformance I have ever seen them put on. I understand that this band is not a pop or musically tight band, but it seemed that everyone was doing their own thing and the sound was muddy and timings were off. I am just going to chauk it up as a loaded Ween night and maybe next time they will bring it.
