Zappa's One Size truely does Fit All - amazing!

    by cdn3034 on 2015-12-03Commodore Ballroom - Vancouver

Dweezil and his killer band blew the doors off the sold out Commodore Ballroom from the first note. Absolutely amazing! First time seeing Zappa Plays Zappa, definitely won't be my last.

    Great, as usual.

by Lyly on 2014-07-09Métropolis - Montreal

It was my 8th time seeing Zappa Plays Zappa, and it was just as good as every other time. The musicians are amazing, and they always seem to enjoy themselves. I can't wait for next time!

True to form, DZ delivers yet again.

by Bogeyjack on 2014-07-07Métropolis - Montreal

Contrary to past shows whereas an album was featured, this was a wide open setlist that surely satisfied all. While classics such as Montana, Cosmic Debris or Call Any Vegetable tickle your senses, Tell Me You Love, Outside Now and City Of Tiny Lights to name a few are songs that you hope to hear. The band is great. FZ had Ruth Underwood and DZ has Sheila Gonzalez who is just phenomenal. As for DZ, his dedication to playing his dad's music and exposing it to new fans young and old or the die hard, thank you very much. He can play that guitar plenty fine, a joy to watch and listen to. Bravo!

Fabulous! Great music! Very well played! Good venue, good staff. I had a wonderful time and wanted more. He could have done 6 encores and I would still have wanted more!

    ZPZ Excellent again!

by zepfan on 2014-02-16Commodore Ballroom - Vancouver

I have seen all of the ZPZ shows in Vancouver, Again this was another excellent performance. Band was in great form and other than the silly audience participation tune it was flawless. Some awesome instrumental breaks and Scheila was superb on multi - instruments. A band always worth seeing.

Zappa and band will blow you away

by anothergadfly on 2014-02-01Commodore Ballroom - Vancouver

Dweezil is as great a rock guitarist as anyone, and the band is tight with an amazing drummer, horns, and an overall well-mixed sound. One of the best concerts I've ever seen/heard, and one of the best guitarists as well. If you get the chance to see them, don't miss it.

    Talented and down to earth

by mikw on 2014-02-01Commodore Ballroom - Vancouver

It was with great pleasure that I brought my flying V guitar to get signed by Dweezil. He was showing us some great ideas on the guitar and some excellent hybrid picking. The fantastic concert was gravy.

    talent

by Flipper153 on 2013-11-21Queen Elizabeth Theatre - Toronto

Dweezil brings the Roxy to Toronto. Gone far too long, really 2 years we have waited. Anyway (as FZ would say) The growth of Dweezil Zappa as an artist, a guitarist and the leader of his little ensemble is just amazing. It truly is an evolution. The attention to detail is so obvious. The band is tight (FZ reference). Dweezil has become a presence on stage, a stage he gratefully shares with his talented band. Dweezil reminds me of his dad, smiling and having fun while not playing and all business when he picks up his guitar and plays. Great show 22 songs, the most challenging setlist out there today. Scheila Gonzales ROCKSTAR ! Kurt Morgan, amazing reminded me of a cartoon character, amazing artist. My 17th Zappa plays Zappa show Bring Dweezil and the band back soon .... please On a down note ..... the venue did not allow me to bring in my camera. I have photographed this band all over the world and shared my pics with Dweezil. I asked if they were taking peoples cell phones away because often these devices have better cameras than the one I tried to bring in. ANYWAY people took hundreds of pics, though no photography was permitted, one guy ran up right in front of the stage taking pics. 20 minuted videos have shown up on line ...... If you can't stop all the cameras, why stop one ????????????????????????

Zappa Plays Zappa - A definite must see

by timmitra on 2013-10-27Queen Elizabeth Theatre - Toronto

This is my seventh time seeing Dweezil Zappa pay homage to Frank's music. The line up of musicians here is stellar as usual. True the line up of musicians has changed, Sheila Gonzales is a phenomenal performer. (She sang all of the vocals back in 2006, when NMB could not make it to the show.) This is the third time seeing Ben Thomas on vocals. He has taken on the roles of NMB and Ray White... who left the tour a few years ago. Ben has come into his own with the material and has taken on the toughest part of all - singing Roxy lyrics that Frank himself would have sung. (Dweezil does the spoke parts, although no preambles which are the best part of Roxy & Elsewhere. "Camp, turn me up so they can hear me.") If you got to see Pete Griffin play bass on ZPZ in the past shows, you will miss him! However Kurt Morgan does grow into the part. He did win me over as the performance progressed. More subdued physically in performance but he proves himself to be a true Zappa fan. (The performers were so young when ZPZ started, that many admitted not being overly familiar with Frank's music.) Kurt in his own right was stellar. I'm pretty sure I saw Chris Norton on keyboards in 2011 at the Queen Elizabeth Theatre with ZPZ. Another amazing performance on keys - even allowing the Mini Moog to have a bit if free rein. Ryan Brown replaces Joe Travers (the vaultmeister) on drums. Very powerful drum playing and great teammate to Kurt Morgan. Which brings us to Dweezil, carrying all of the guitar parts himself. In past performances he was assisted by Jamie Kime, Ray White and Steve Vai on guitars. Had a chance to meet with Dweezil before the show as part of his Master Guitar Class. He had mentioned that some of the parts of Zappa's music was so complex to perform that three performers would cover the scales. If one player fell off (and it's nearly impossible to jump back in) the other two would carry the melody. If a second fell off, you'd realize you now had the responsibility to carry the piece. With that in mind, Dweezil played all of the guitar parts as the solo guitarist. If you have even a mild appreciation for Frank Zappa's music, you owe it to yourself to catch Zappa Plays Zappa whenever you can. The music of Frank Zappa is a legacy in American music that will carry on and this is your chance to see it performed as genetically close as seeing the man himself. As Dweezil intimated in the pre-show talk, they are very different musicians and Dweezil, who is just a regular guy, does his utmost to carry on the legacy of performing Frank's music. If you have the chance, go see Dweezil's Master Class before hand. It doesn't matter what your skill level. It's a wonderful chance to sit down and discuss the music and how it's played. You will also get to see the Gibson Frank Zappa Roxy SG custom guitar up close. Dweezil will demonstrate how it works if you ask him. Also after the Roxy show, Dweezil and the band will stick around and sign stuff. So bring something to have signed! (I should have had him sign my guitar, Doh!)
