About

1998 Brit Award winners The Verve are one of the most iconic and enduring Britpop acts, carving out a unique sound with layers of lush, guitar-backed sounds and the emotive voice and deeply personal lyrics from frontman Richard Ashcroft. Ticket buyers who were treated to the sounds of The Verve on tour experienced one of the more spectacular concert experiences of the Britpop era. Their epic singles, bolstered by the virtuous slide-guitar of Verve guitarist Nick McCabe, filled up arenas, stadiums and concert halls with catchy and dreamy alternative rock, pumping up and mellowing out crowds at the same time.

The Verve came out of Wigan, England, in the early 1990s after the members formed a band in college, soaking up the sounds of the “Madchester” scene from the 1980s and the burgeoning “shoegazing” movement in the country. Their first two albums, “A Storm in Heaven” and “A Northern Soul,” produced a few minor hits and some critical acclaim, and the band briefly broke up before reuniting in 1997 for their next album, “Urban Hymns,” which was No. 1 on the English charts. The album became a massive hit, propelled by the single, “Bittersweet Symphony,” and marked one of the great moments of Britpop. The Verve broke up soon after, with Ashcroft embarking on an acclaimed solo career. Nine years later in 2008, they came together to put out the album “Forth,” boasting a No. 4 UK hit in “Love is Noise.” Though The Verve may be inactive now, but there's speculation as to another reunion in the future. Until then, the band has plenty of extraordinary albums and singles that are perfect for any Britpop or alternative-rock music lover to discover.
