San Jose Sharks History

The California Golden Seals played at the Oakland Coliseum from 1967–1976 before relocating to Cleveland. While a failure at the box office and on the ice, the Seals sowed the seeds for the Sharks' arrival some 15 years later. With Wayne Gretzky's trade to Los Angeles in 1988, hockey fever spread across non-traditional markets, and San Jose was among the first cities into which the league ventured.

The Sharks initially played at the Cow Palace in Daly City in 1991 before moving into their current home, the SAP Center, in 1993. The new digs agreed with the team, as they experienced an NHL record 58-point increase over the prior season. Early stars such as Sergei Makarov, Pat Falloon and the Latvian duo of Sandis Ozoliņš and Artūrs Irbe gave the Sharks an early level of respectability.

Gaining a reputation as giant-killers, the upstart Sharks dispatched the heavily favored Detroit Red Wings in the 1994 Western Conference Finals and the Presidents' Trophy-winning St. Louis Blues in 2000. The Sharks continued to flirt with success for the next decade, riding the talents of such star players as Owen Nolan, Marco Sturm, Evgeni Nabokov, Patrick Marleau, and Joe Thornton.

The Sharks went on to win the Presidents' Trophy again in 2009, and have captured a total of six Pacific Division titles and appeared in the Western Conference Finals four times.

San Jose Sharks at SAP Center

The San Jose Sharks have made the SAP Center in San Jose their home since 1993. The "Shark Tank," as it is affectionately known, is one of the most raucous buildings in the league. In 2006, the SAP Center, which also hosts concert events year-round in addition to hockey, sold 633,435 tickets to non-sporting events — the most out of any venue in the Western United States and fourth-highest in the world.

Food supervisors special breed closing the security rollups for the food stations while customers still need utensils and condiments and CHANGE. Merchandise staff amazing.

    Oilers

Visiting San Jose for the first time and the staff at SAP center was great, attendant at the game gave us a tour of the center before the game. Fans though were something else. They did not like fans from another team entering into their building.

    Friendly Shark Fans

by Kimboma on 2015-01-19SAP Center at San Jose - San Jose

The bars in San Pedro Square are about a 10 minute walk. Great atmosphere and friendly fans. If you wanted to you could take their GO Train for an hour to San Francisco.

    Sharks vs. Jets

by Phester66 on 2014-03-30SAP Center at San Jose - San Jose

We were visiting from Vancouver and decided to take in a Sharks game. Parking is easy at SAP Center but pricey at $25. Remember the 101 South is super slow, took us 1:45 from Marina in SF. Doors did not open till 6:15 for the 7:30 game. Lots of fast food options inside but no sit down restaurant/bar - those are all outside and no in/out privileges - silly! Not many visiting fans from color of jerseys in evidence but a fun evening. Only a few rude fans during national anthems etc - better behaved bunch than at Staples Center.

    California Hockey!

by bayoubunny66 on 2013-04-01HP Pavilion At San Jose - San Jose

The game was great! There is a lot on the line with each game this year, although mathmeticians might disagree, so every shift was intense and the atmosphere was electric. I would have preferred a closer game and a shootout but the best team won!

    Go Canucks!

by sanan on 2011-12-31HP Pavilion At San Jose - San Jose

We really enjoyed the game. We were staying in San Francisco for a few days and took the train to San Jose to see the game. The HP Pavillion was right next to the Cal train so it was very easy to get to.
