Washington Capitals History
The Capitals were founded in 1974, but did not post a winning record or reach the Playoffs until the 1982-1983 season, when a group led by top scorers Dennis Maruk and Mike Gartner, along with defenseman Rod Langway, ended the frustration. It began a remarkable streak of 14 consecutive seasons in the Playoffs.
After that streak ended in 1996-1997, the Capitals bounced back the next year to win their first conference title. Led by right wing Peter Bondra and goalie Olaf Kölzig, they defeated Boston, Ottawa and Buffalo in the Playoffs to earn their first berth in the Stanley Cup Final. But the Caps were swept in four games.
Alexander Ovechkin arrived in 2005, and since 2007-2008, the Capitals have reached the Playoffs almost every year. The 2014-2015 season began a run of three consecutive years that the Capitals reached the second round, only to lose in heartbreaking fashion. In 2015-2016, they won a franchise-high and NHL-best 56 games only to be felled by Pittsburgh, all the losses coming by one goal. They won a league-best 55 games the next year, but again lost to the Penguins in the second round.
The Capitals would go on to win their first Stanley Cup Championship in franchise history in 2018 when they beat the Vegas Golden Knights. Ovechkin currently ranks second in most career goals scored with 822 and continues to chase Wayne Gretzky's career mark of 894. Along with Gartner and Langway, Yvon Labre and Dale Hunter have had their numbers retired.

Rating: 4 out of 5by Anonymous on 2016-10-14Verizon Center - Washington Rating: 4 out of 5 Capital game
by Skaterboy on 2014-12-19Verizon Center - WashingtonTwo teams were sizing each other for nearly a period and a half. Then it got going with Backstrom scoring a hat trick for the Capitals. The Lightning fighting back to 3 -2 and taking off the goalie for an extra attacker but their defense made a mistake and the Capitals scored in the empty net for a 4 -2 win.
Rating: 4 out of 5by Anonymous on 2014-12-01Verizon Center - Washington We arrived 20 minutes before start and there was a mass of people still waiting to get in. Seemed the security check may have been taking too long. Also, we had to wait in the same line as ticket holders to get in to will call which seemed odd. Once we were in, it was smooth sailing to our seats and a great experience! Note that Row Q in the 400's section is the absolute last row!
Rating: 4 out of 5 Washington Capitals in Washington
by Van2010Fan on 2013-10-22Verizon Center - WashingtonI went. They won. The fans were supportive and respectful of all. Transportation to Verizon Centre was great! Then it was onwards to Pittsburgh for Steelers and Penguins.
Rating: 5 out of 5 Fabulous atmosphere and fun game!
by Mommy on 2013-10-06Verizon Center - WashingtonWe had the best time at the Washington Capitals home opener! The atmosphere was incredible and we had great seats. It was awesome to be able to buy tickets and be able to go to the game. In our hometown of Toronto it is near impossible to get tickets unless you want to pay BIG bucks from a scalper. This was easy and we had the best time. The Verizon Centre is a great arena and we had great seats. We were very lucky to see such a great game as well.

Rating: 4 out of 5 Caps vs. Sens
by agdd on 2010-10-15Verizon Center - WashingtonThis was my first time to a Caps game in DC, having just moved to the area from Canada. There was a good vibe to the building, although there were a surprisingly small number of Sens fans.
Rating: 5 out of 5 Washington Caps vs. Calgary Flames
by AndreaQ on 2010-03-31Verizon Center - WashingtonI flew down from Calgary to Washington, DC, to see the Calgary Flames play against the Washington Capitals and I was amazed at the spirit and enthusiasm that was displayed by both the teams and fans. The Verizon Centre was modern, clean and the staff was incredibly friendly! For the pre-game skate fans were allowed to go right along the boards to watch and cheer! The seats we had were amazing Section 113 Row F, the Washington Capitals fans were fantastic and incredibly courteous! Truly an amazing experience!!!!
