San Francisco 49ers History

The San Francisco 49ers were established in 1946 as a member of the All-America Football Conference and later joined the NFL in 1950 when the leagues merged. Tony Morabito, founder of the San Francisco 49ers, was the sports pioneer of the West, bringing San Francisco its first major league team in a professional sports business that was dominated by the East Coast.

By 1979, the 49ers had won three NFC West Division Championships, but with the introduction of quarterback Joe Montana, the team quickly began to dominate the NFL. By 1981, the San Francisco 49ers won their first Super Bowl Championship (XVI) and would go on to repeat their Super Bowl Success in 1984 (XIX), 1988 (XXIII), 1989 (XXIV), and again in 1994 (XXIX).

By 2013, the 49ers once again found themselves playing in a Super Bowl Championship (XLVII) against the Baltimore Ravens. With a surprising loss of 31-34, the San Francisco 49ers left the Super Bowl for the first time without a victory. The team would return to the Super Bowl in 2020 and 2024, but fell in both games to the Kansas City Chiefs. The team has produced a number of notable Hall of Fame players throughout its history, including Bob Saint Clair, Jimmy Johnson, Ronnie Lott, Dave Wilcox, Steve Young, Fred Dean, and Jerry Rice, alongside head coach Bill Walsh.

Stadium in the middle of nowhere

by NFLfan on 2016-11-10Levi's® Stadium - Santa Clara

The game itself was awesome, but the Levi stadium is so far away from downtown San Francisco. It took us 2.5 hours to get there from our Union square hotel on public transit Taxi or Uber would have cost $80-100 US each way, so was not affordable to do it that way. Public transit cost about $20 US. The new stadium is beautiful. Parking is $60, so be prepared for that. All food and drinks seem a little over-priced with $8.00 US for a pop. Try the food trucks outside the stadium for some pre-game food and drinks to get some higher quality food for a better price. The fish tacos were amazing! The game itself was great, but a pricey endeavor overall.

    Levi Stadium

by pokay on 2016-10-05Levi's® Stadium - Santa Clara

About 50 miles away from San Francisco. It took 2.5 hours to get back to SF after the game. Perhaps staying in Santa Clara would have been better. Nice stadium with courteous staff. The section was rowdy. Police acted quickly to eject drunken spectators who were likely to start fights.

    Amazing game and experience.

by Smittalou on 2013-12-26Candlestick Park - San Francisco

Time flies when you having fun, and I thoroughly enjoyed seeing the last regular season game at 'the stick.' The VIP experience was well worth the extra cash. They threw in some good extras like pennants, a game day program, all you can eat BBQ, and all you can drink beer.

    Game was awesome

by Draler on 2012-12-11Candlestick Park - San Francisco

Of course I am a little biased being a 49ers fan but the game was excellent. I've been a fan for 30 years and never seen them live so to go from Toronto to San Francisco to see them at Candlestick was amazing.

Game was great, security was ridiculous

by wcartwright on 2011-11-22Candlestick Park - San Francisco

The game itself was a lot of fun, and was great to attend. The insane processes in place to get into the stadium made the whole experience much less enjoyable. To the point that I would not attend a game again. There's no excuse for a full body pat-down of everyone entering the stadium, and preventing any reasonable bags from entry is over the top. Unless these processes are improved, I wouldn't attend a game here again.

    49ers on top

by ajdinning on 2011-08-22Candlestick Park - San Francisco

The game was enjoyable, particularly as it was my first NFL game. What was a shame was all the fighting and violence from within the stadium and the shooting in the car park.
