    Fantastic magical night

by Andrea on 2019-12-06L'Olympia - Montreal

It’s one of those shows that if you don’t know you can’t imagine - but it’s so good - the band is amazing and devendra is light and wry and sings and moves beautifully. The experience is transformative.

Poor sound quality as usual with the Metropolis. Live performance was not crazy by Devendra either...

    Devendra Banhart is amazing

by ladymadonna on 2010-05-19Commodore Ballroom - Vancouver

This man is an amazing artist, entertainer, and musician. He played fantastically and engaged the audience (the people paying attention anyways). Absolutely mesmerizing. However, I was distracted by the disrespectful people who decided that this was an acceptable place to carry on conversations during the performance. They appeared restless/bored, as if they were expecting something louder and dance-ier, when in fact Devendra Banhart is more along the lines of psychidelic/folk rock. Considering he actually told the audience to be quiet while he's playing, he must have been feeling annoyed and disrespected as well. All in all, the performance itself was fantastic. I would see Devendra play again in a heart beat. The crowd, however, could use some manners training.

    needs less shirts.

by UnagiFiend on 2010-03-26Commodore Ballroom - Vancouver

this was a great show. the band was incredible and devandra's vocals were amazing. the only bummer was the crowd was talking way too loud during some of the softer parts of their show and the band was obviously bothered by it. so when you're at a show... show some respect and shut up. we don't pay to go there and chat, we want to hear some music.

    Against the odds

by thornyrabbit on 2010-03-22Commodore Ballroom - Vancouver

Devendra was great - strong voice, good cross section of musical output, fantastic band. The audience were a different story - annoying, loud, drunken and unpleasant. When acoustic, they drowned him out wanting rock type songs, and one got the impression they were there for the wrong reason. Support act Dorothy has a stunning voice, but the accapella tends to make her monotonous - when she joined Devendra on stage she really worked.

hypnotic, fun, a little disconnected from crowd

by Tanko on 2010-03-20Showbox at the Market - Seattle

This Seattle show spanned his repetoire nice and evenly, giving the crowd a good taste of all his styles. It was great to hear the solo acoustic songs, although they went into the solo acoustic set a bit too early in my mind ... before the crowd needed a cool down. Still the band sounded great, good vibes and energy and Devendra was very engaging ... but was kind of in his own world rather than connecting with the energy of the audience I saw him the next night in Vancouver and Devendra and his band totally short-changed the audience ... they played a shorter set by 2 or 3 songs then played no encore. Granted they were without a band member who wasn't let past the border and there were some annoying crowd members in his solo acoustic set. Still for the majority of crowd who are fans, paid their money to see him and were a good audience ... the shorter set and no encore, complete with whining about the crowd was a slap in the face to the mostly respectful audience. Definitely lost some respect for them after the vancouver show.

Devendra is one of my favourite artists, so I am admittedly biased - I was thrilled by the talent and sincere enthusiasm of their performance. The venue itself, perhaps, was lacking in character to match the eccentric quality of his music/personality, but I think true fans were not/would not be deterred by that. Definitely a rare treat for me, and I do hope they return to Toronto in the near future!

Devendra is the coolest/ quirkiest guy ever!!!

by Kate73 on 2009-11-28Queen Elizabeth Theatre - Toronto

There was no opening band which was great because we got to see more devendra. Instead of taking an intermission to give the band a break, Devendra did some solo acoustic stuff in between the two main sets. He told us a couple funny stories; I love when bands actually talk to the audience. The sound was great and the song variety was exceptional. He played songs from old albums as well as a lot of newer more mainstream stuff. The best part was that the bass beat was really strong so you can dance to almost everything. And the lyrics make you think a lot, you should bring a notebook and pen if you go to see him (I am only half kidding here) because you will get great ideas that you wish you could write down.

    Devendra blew me away

by DjBj on 2009-11-28Queen Elizabeth Theatre - Toronto

I had a phenomenal time. I went with my boyfriend who is far from a fan but even he liked it. The range of music that was played was phenomenal. It's unbelievable to watch him go from upbeat songs to mellow diddies! LOVED THIS SHOW.
