About

Martin Matte On Tour

A former radio host, Martin Matte has been at the forefront of the Quebecois comedy circuit since the debut of his first one-man show, Histoires vraies ("True Stories"), in 2000. It kept him busy for the next four years, during which he performed the show more than 300 times across Quebec for over 250,000 spectators. His next show — 2007's Condamné à l'excellence ("Condemned to Excellence") — was an even bigger hit, attracting a total audience of more than 400,000.

But all that box office-shattering success was a mere warm-up for the 2014 debut of Les Beaux Malaises, a sitcom that, much like Seinfeld and Curb Your Enthusiasm before it, saw Matte playing an exaggerated version of his real self as he navigated all sorts of uncomfortable predicaments. (For example, one notorious episode focused on Matte's efforts to procure the services of a prostitute for his disabled brother.)

Over the next couple of years, Les Beaux Malaises ("The Beautiful Malaise," or "The Beautiful Discomfort") became one of the most popular shows on Quebec television, attracting an average of 2 million viewers per week. Wishing to go out on a high note, Matte ended the show after three seasons. Its final episode in 2017 coincided with the announcement of Matte's third one-man show — Eh la la..! — which sold 50,000 tickets for performances across Quebec within the first 24 hours they were on sale.

Despite achieving a rock-star level of success in his home province for nearly two decades, Matte has thus far resisted the temptation to perform in English to court a broader national audience. For him, Quebecois comedy is its own special art form that doesn't easily translate to other cultures.

As Matte told The Montreal Gazette in 2016, "It's a whole other thing to hear comedy with our accent, our vision as francophones in this sea of anglophones. Even comics from France don't have the same impact [here]. There's something unique about Québécois comics."
