About

LAURYN HILL IN CONCERT:

As a member of the Fugees and a decorated solo artist, the legendary Ms. Lauryn Hill broke new ground for female artists in hip hop, becoming one of the most dominant musical figures of the '90s and the first hip-hop artist to take home a Grammy for Album of the Year. With new material and a critically-acclaimed tour in 2013, Hill proved she hasn't lost her edge – or her voice – taking the stage with a full backing band and breathing new life into her catalog of hits with updated arrangements, extensive improvisation, and dramatic readings of her socially conscious verses.

FANS WHO BOUGHT TICKETS SAY:

"Do not sleep on Lauryn! She is back. She was on point! This is what music has been missing!"

"The vibe was continuously raised to higher heights. What is quickly apparent is that this is no traditional act – from the beginning a very unique and nostalgic vibe is set through the familiar set list, but against brand new arrangements that drive the classic material head first into the multi-genre-infused present."

"Epic performance by Lauryn Hill. She killed it in every way possible. So happy I was able to be a part of it."

BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT:

Hill rose to international fame when the Fugees' seminal 1996 album The Score topped charts around the world, earning a Grammy for her spellbinding cover of Roberta Flack's "Killing Me Softly." The group’s dissolution in 1997 did nothing to hinder her success – 1998’s The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill, her only solo studio album to date, debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200, landed a No. 1 single with “Doo Wop (That Thing)”, and took home five Grammys, including Album of the Year. A seasoned performer, Hill continued to impress fans in 2013 with her substance-over-style approach, building excitement for the much-anticipated 2014 release of her sophomore album Letters From Exile.

2 hours late, lack lustre performance

    by Victoria on 2023-11-17

This was a huge disappointment. I love her as an artist and have always been a huge fan. But damn this was a horrible experience. She was 2 hours late, we sat in a stadium with literally no music. She came on, and didn’t apologize and had an awful attitude. Half way through her performance she literally just disappeared for 20min and they played random music. She came back and did a bit more and it was done. The whole time, she was barley audible, had very little stage presence and the band completely drown her out

    Solid show, amazing voice

    by W. M. on 2023-11-13

Lauryn Hill came on about 9:30. She sang a lot of cool variations of her Miseducation songs, but I could see why some people might want the familiar classic versions. Wyclef did a great job and brought a lot of energy.

    Giving a very generous 3/5

    by Georgia on 2023-11-06

Didn't care that she was late because that was to be expected of her. She sounded great despite her vocal strain, but that was when I could actually hear her. I understand that she can't perform the original versions of her songs, but the sound was so bad, that could barely make out what songs she was performing half the time. The show was also just very chaotic in general, the random raves in the middle of the set, were odd but fun lmao. And I was little disappointed that Wyclef only performed for like 30 minutes. Maybe I'm just being generous because she's a legend.

    Sound sucked

    by jj on 2023-11-06

First time I have left a concert that early. Concert started so late, the sound quality was terrible and up in the 300s, the visuals were mostly blocked. Hands down, one of the worst concerts I have ever been to.

    Unexpected

by Naldo on 2023-11-05Scotiabank Arena - Toronto

I loved the show from beginning to end. She had a slight cold but she delivered in a way that I didn’t expect. The best part of the show was when she’d sing a song a 2nd time in a more stripped down version.

    Wyclef saved the day

by Skimmy on 2023-11-03Scotiabank Arena - Toronto

As much as I love Miss Lauren Hill, her portion of the show sounded awful. The orchestra was overpowering and muffled and we couldn't hear Lauren's singing. Sadly, her songs were unrecognizable because of this and her taking extreme creative license with the singing. Wyclef's portion was what we came for - high energy, great singing, well tuned and the songs we know and love. The hanging speakers also obscured our view. It wasn't a well thought out show from a sound perspective.

Lauryn Hill & Fugees: A Lackluster Night

    by SSpencer82 on 2023-11-03Scotiabank Arena - Toronto

I went to the Lauryn Hill and Fugees concert recently, and it was a pretty interesting experience. A few years back, I caught Lauryn Hill in concert, and it left me feeling disappointed because she changed the rhythm and beat of her songs from the album. This time, I kind of expected the same, but it actually made me appreciate her musical talent in a new way. Even though I couldn't sing along because of the changes, her performance was impressive. But, the concert had its issues. Lauryn Hill started her set super late, close to 10 PM. This lateness affected the Fugees' performance too. Sadly, we didn't know ahead of time that Pras couldn't perform in Canada due to legal issues. That was a letdown because the Fugees were the main reason I went. As for the Fugees, Lauryn Hill and Wyclef Jean were great, but they only played a few songs before they had to leave the stage due to time constraints. I have awesome memories of seeing the Fugees back in 1996, and I had high hopes for this concert, but it fell short. If all three of them could reunite, I might consider seeing the Fugees again, depending on the price and location. But I'm not sure about seeing Lauryn Hill solo again. Overall, I'd rate this concert a 5/10.

    Rubbish

    by Niks1999 on 2023-11-02

Absolutely rubbush. Please save your money. Two hours late! I don’t know why you need a full orchestra on stage when no one can recognize your songs. We want to dance and feel uplifted by your lyrics. Thankfully Wyclef came out in the second half and saved us from the massacre. I’m sorry if I sound harsh but I was really looking forward to seeing Lauryn Hill live as she is so talented. Save your money for someone who respects their fans. Definitely a waste of money and time.

    Sound quality terrible

This venue has really bad acoustics and I will never book a live music event here again.
