This performance of RENT provided such a thoughtful rendition for this 20th anniversary tour. The set design was simple but effective, and the actors truly filled the space in every scene. The sound and lighting complemented the set design by coming up with meaningful ways to call your attention to different aspects of the performance. A truly meaningful experience provided by all, well done!
First time seeing this musical, although knew the general idea of the story. Unfortunately I found the instruments to be too loud during the songs and quite often was unable to clearly hear the lyrics of the songs, making it difficult to follow along with the story.
Pretty disappointed with the substandard quality of the production in terms of performances and technical execution (very unbalanced sound). Tickets are expensive and these shows should be of a much higher quality. The singing was uneven - many out of tune moments. Some of the performers were pretty unenthusiastic - a problem for a show of such intended emotional intensity. The choreography was at times too much, and clearly not everyone was able to manage the physical and vocal requirements. It's a great show, but this production seemed a bit lacklustre.
Our seats were great, performers did their very best, but unfortunately, we were not familiar with the play Rent as we had never seen the movie and could not get much information about the storyline. We left after the first act as we really could not understand the songs and found the music harsh. More information that we could have researched in advance would have been appreciated. We know the performers were doing their best, in particular the character Angel was very good.
Confusing play. Was very difficult to understand the plot an hour into it. The acting and singing was god but wasn’t that good to overcome the plot issues
So happy that I was finally able to catch Rent live. I’ve been waiting years to see this show and it was amazing!! Such great performers. The cast is incredibly talented.
Myself I loved it, and was worth every penny. I would definitely go see it again. However, from an outsider; someone who never heard of it or seen the movie, it can get confusing at times in terms of how the scenes are portrayed. I over heard people talking in between the acts.
The show itself was so-so, but once again, poor sound quality ruins yet another musical at the NAC in Ottawa. Paying $150+ per ticket and not being able to understand the lyrics in most songs kind of spoils the whole thing. There’s simply no excuse for the substandard sound quality that haunts every musical staged at the NAC. I say if you want to see the show, find a different city with an arts centre with qualified sound techs.
So enjoyed the show's super talented singers and highly athletic cast. We certainly got our money's worth. The show was so long that the couple in front of me thought it was over, when it was actually just breaking for intermission!
