    Disappointed

by Gormley on 2022-11-02National Arts Centre / Centre national des Arts - Ottawa

I've seen the RWB before, but I'm sorry to say that I was disappointed with the production. The second half of the show was slightly better than the first half with stronger dance performances. In general though, there were large gaps between scenes, and the music didn't seem to help support the emotion of the dance. The other couple in the balcony booth left at the intermission.

    Expectations exceeded

by Court&Emran on 2022-11-02National Arts Centre / Centre national des Arts - Ottawa

This was my husband’s first experience at the ballet and it’s fair to say we will be attending more in the future! The physicality of the dancers was exceptional, the orchestra was phenomenal, the choreography and story telling was beautiful to watch. Thank you for taking my favourite novel and adapting it to dance, simply beautiful

The choreography and the music were really well done.

    Incredible

Amazing from start to finish. But certainly for an adult audience.

    Beautiful experience

by Heather on 2022-11-01National Arts Centre / Centre national des Arts - Ottawa

I admit I was very curious as to how The Handmaid's Tale would be interpreted in a ballet. I enjoy live performances in general, so was expecting something unusual. And it was. The costumes and body movements were quite unusual, fascinating and captivating, but more.... This ballet was hauntingly beautiful. There were several dances that were absolutely breathtaking. I found myself sighing out loud at the conclusion, amazed at how gorgeous and emotionally riveting these were. Quite extraordinary. I think it was one of the most amazing live performances I have experienced.

    A Handmaid’s Tale - Royal Winnipeg Ballet

by DBB.111 on 2022-11-01National Arts Centre / Centre national des Arts - Ottawa

Happy to have seen this. (Have read the book, seen the movie, the opera, and the series - why not ?) Gentler than I expected. The colour caste system wasn’t consistent here - the ceremony seemed like a tryst between equals rather than a nightmarish forced copulation or rape. At one point I worried we were seeing the story focusing on the men in Gilead. Aside: Is there only the one great Canadian novel ?

    Yikes

by HNS on 2022-11-01National Arts Centre / Centre national des Arts - Ottawa

This was one of the worst performances my partner and I have ever seen. The choreography is bizarre, the music is nonsense, and the only saving grace was the clear skill of the dancers and their ability to dance through some of the stupidest choreography that's ever been done with a straight face. It was so bad it was insulting. Best part of the show was the other group of people who laughed at the vagina arms and the shaken baby doll. What the hell.

    A magical performance!

by Dan on 2021-12-11National Arts Centre / Centre national des Arts - Ottawa

We were very excited to see a live performance after going so long without that opportunity. The atmosphere was exciting, the dancers were mesmerizing, and the audience was very appreciative of the whole experience.

    Overwhelming perfume!

by A. K. on 2021-12-08National Arts Centre / Centre national des Arts - Ottawa

NAC staff friendly, everything nice and clean. The ballet and orchestra were all great, except that with the toxic amount of perfume the guests were wearing it was impossible to enjoy or appreciate any of the show. Unless the NAC ban perfume and be strict about it, I can’t see myself going back soon.

    Somewhat disappointing

by Mickey on 2021-12-08National Arts Centre / Centre national des Arts - Ottawa

The 1st half of the performance was like watching amateur hour. The set, the xmas tree, the young dancers were very poor quality. This is not the nutcracker I recall by the Royal Winnipeg Ballet troup. The 2nd half of the performance was far superior to the 1st. Overall we felt let down. Low cost production and some very weak cast members.
