Saskatchewan Roughriders History

The Saskatchewan Roughriders are a professional team in the Canadian Football League (CFL) and one of the oldest professional North American sports franchises. Originally competing as the Regina Rugby Club in 1910, the team name settled permanently on the Saskatchewan Roughriders in 1946 before joining the nascent CFL in 1958. The Roughriders made the playoffs every year from 1962 to 1976, winning their first Grey Cup in 1966. Overall, the team has made 19 Grey Cup appearances, with four wins including 1989, 2007 and 2013. Across their history, the Saskatchewan Roughriders roster has consisted of 20 Canadian Football Hall of Famers, seven Annis Stukus Trophy winners for the CFL’s top head coach and and four Most Outstanding Players, as well as four recipients of the Most Outstanding Canadian Award, six Most Outstanding Offensive Lineman Awards, three John Agro Special Teams Awards and two Most Outstanding Defensive Player Awards. The Roughriders’ rivalry with the Winnipeg Blue Bombers has led to two annual matchups between the traditional Labour Day Weekend game and the now-dubbed Banjo Bowl the following weekend.

Saskatchewan Roughriders at Mosaic Stadium

Rider Nation have been gathering for Saskatchewan Roughriders home games at Mosaic Mosaic Stadium since its opening in 2017. The 33,500-seat venue replaced the Roughriders’ long-standing home at the historic Taylor Field after eight decades. The spectator-friendly setting is complete with sunken-bowl seating and tiled panels that partially cover three sides of the field to protect from the Prairie weather. Fans set a capacity record at 33,506 during a 2019 Saskatchewan Roughriders matchup against rivals the Winnipeg Blue Bombers. In 2022, Mosaic Stadium hosted the Grey Cup for the first time, marking the fourth time the championship game was held in the city of Regina.

Game was good, fans and venue not so much.

by Cooper on 2023-09-06Mosaic Stadium - Regina

Easy enough to get to the stadium. I was wearing blue in a sea of green and my wife and I were being badgered by some of the green fans. Even had a dip thrown at us and struck my wife in the head. Security handled it well and came and stood behind us for most of the game after. Getting drinks at the “Pil Country” was atrocious. Shouldn’t take 30 minutes to pop open cans. Got better as the game went on but the line didn’t move for the first 30 minutes or so, missing kick off and a large portion of the 1st quarter. Great atmosphere, met some great fans both green and blue! Go Bombers Go!

    Wasn't that a party?? !!!

by Bem on 2023-09-06Mosaic Stadium - Regina

Wow... Our boys in green brought the gusto! The Bombers brought the challenge. A constant "give & take"on the field and the score board! The stadium's collective average heart rate must've been 100! The beer was cold, fellow fans made it a fun experience and the Rider stadium felt like "home"

Great facility and had a great time. The check in was a bit of a pain as we weren’t aware of the clear bag policy. Overall a super afternoon

    The game was great.

    by Kelli on 2023-08-23

The game was great. Didn’t even mind the mile long walk to the stadium from where we parked. We were very unimpressed however, when my wife was not allowed to bring her small purse into the game. It was actually ridiculous. And since we weren’t going to walk 2 more miles to bring the purse back, we had to leave it behind. It was a 50 dollar purse, and we really feel that we should be reimbursed - there was no warning until we were walking in. Crazy, idiotic rule. And we should have at least been made aware of it before we were at the gate.

    Riders home game experience

    by RVibe on 2023-07-19

The stadium is excellent! The seats and view were great! The vendors need to be fully stocked so they don’t run out before halftime is over! I stood in line for 15 minutes only to find out before I even reached the front of the line that they were out of burgers and hotdogs! They only had apple crisp and waffle fries!

    by DP on 2023-07-19

The experience at Mosaic Stadium was exceptional. People around us were into the game and not into doing foolish things. Stadium was comfortable and view of the field unrestricted. From arrival to exit a great day. Too bad teh Riders lost.

    Slow start but great finish!

    by Steve on 2023-07-09

It was a defensive battle all game and Riders were determined to run the ball early. Edmonton kept getting single points by kicking into the end zone. Score was 4-3 about half way thru. Riders were down 11-3 with a couple minutes left in the game. Then it was like Harris woke up! Everything he did was perfect from that point on to get the Riders down the field for the touchdown. 11-9. But a single point with a minute left wasn't enough. They had to go for the 2 point conversion and Harris did it again! 11-11.... Then against all expectations, Riders kick the ball into the end zone and the Elks rookie doesn't run it out... point Riders and they win 12-11... Everyone goes home happy!
