Sousatzka is a wonderful new musical

    by Musicfan11111 on 2017-04-09Elgin Theatre - Toronto

The cast is amazing .... the story is touching .. the music is great and Victoria Clark is at her usual Tony winning best ... the critics must have went to the wrong theatre. It's a beautifully woven story giving you wonderful insight into the suffering that the lead characters are overcoming together. Well worth seeing more than once.

    Sousatzka

by Moley on 2017-04-04Elgin - Toronto

I was delighted by this show. The story is brilliant, the staging and set design are creative and the performances knock it out of the park! This show is a very creative attempt at telling the story of struggle at two times and places in our history. The paralleling of Madame Sousatzka's story and that of Themba is briliant. The challenge of trying to tell this complex story on stage took some doing. The set and staging was commendable. It was a great effort and the movement between the current day and past in South Africa and Poland kept the show moving. The musical numbers range from cute and charming to powerful and heart wrenching. My particular favourites were Rainbow Nation(Ryan Allen), My Son(Montego Glover) and Let go(Victoria Clark). I think there is an opportunity to cut some of the less meaningful numbers and let this work stand as a profound statement -reminding the audience of struggle and showing us triumphant. All are things we need to be reminded of today. I have been repeat times to see this show and it keeps getting better! I am sad to see it close on April 9th and will watch for where it re-opens.

    Boring

by Kimby on 2017-04-02Elgin Theatre - Toronto

The acting and singing was very good. They did the best they could with the material they were given. The musical itself did not have much going for it. The story line was all over the place and the music itself was boring and dated.

    Sousatska soars!

by Wendon on 2017-04-02Elgin Theatre - Toronto

A busy story set in history but with some unrealistic elements - the concert pianist plays a surprise composition of his own while his extended family dance to the music in the concert hall? A little too long but each actor's performance was over the top ! Excellent entertainment value!

Wish I hadnt read the reviews

by cookieb on 2017-04-01Elgin Theatre - Toronto

We really enjoyed the play but our response was coloured by the hypercritical reviews. I certainly liked it more than the Book of Mormon which was a big hit. We loved the way images were moved through the theatre. And I loved the African music. I agree there probably were too many story lines introduced and I found the ending a little cheesy but overal I would definitely recommend it.

    A wonderfully moving production!

by Theatregran on 2017-03-25Elgin Theatre - Toronto

Sousatzka is a production I will not long forget. It had a moving and rich story line, brilliant singing and acting by all, and was beautifully staged. Absolutely loved the show.

    Disastska

by Ellpell on 2017-03-24Elgin Theatre - Toronto

I wanted so much to like this but 20 minutes in and I knew there was trouble. Seems to have suffered from too many hands in the pot. Too many ideas, concepts, styles, none of them fit together and in the end we were left with a hodgepodge of a musical that left me confused and unmoved. I think I laughed once but never shed a tear. This will need a director with a very strong vision and the freedom to rewrite and rework it. As it is now, it's too much show and not enough theatre.

    Was Entertaining and

by Sayehkid on 2017-03-23Elgin Theatre - Toronto

Sousatzka was entertaining, moving with clever moments of humour. The drawing of parallels between the Holocaust and Apartheid was nicely woven and expressed. The cast were strong and all brought life and essence to their characters. The musical score and both vocal and dancing performances were captivating. My wife and I came away with great appreciation of the experience and satisfied in an evening well spent.
