STURGILL SIMPSON IN CONCERT:
Country singer-songwriter Sturgill Simpson stays true to his Appalachian roots with his no-frills singing style and boot-stomping live shows. His rocking sound pays homage to country outlaws like Johnny Cash and Waylon Jennings, but never feels like imitation -- Simpson's cerebral lyrics and psychedelic production touches keep the music firmly grounded in the present. Whether he's extolling the virtues of a "Life of Sin" or playing his unique cover of When In Rome's "The Promise", Simpson always impresses with his authentic vocals, smart songwriting, and unbeatable energy on tour.
BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT:
Sturgill Simpson was born and raised in Kentucky, where he began playing the guitar at age eight. He formed the bluegrass band Sunday Valley in 2004, releasing an album and touring with the band before relocating to Nashville to pursue a solo career. He self-released his debut album High Top Mountain in 2013, receiving praise from critics for his updated approach to the classic outlaw country sound. His sophomore album Metamodern Sounds in Country Music followed in 2014, expanding both his lyrical range and sonic palette with heady explorations of the human experience and an array of psychedelic production flourishes. A passionate performer with a genuine country rock sound, Sturgill continues to do Kentucky proud on his unforgettable concert tours.

Dynamite band backing him up and overall just a really tight show.
A big fan of Sturgill's. Awesome material and great musical talent. The new generation of country for sure. Laur Joemets is a very talented guitarist and a good fit with Sturgill. Will definitely go again if and when he returns.
First time at the Danforth Music Hall. Great venue, didn't really care for Sturgill Simpson that much. Yes, he's talented and has an incredible voice. But there was no magic and I thought the band just didn't fit right. It's a contradiction...country,,,horns..rockish....keyboard did a semi techno thing,,,,didn't work for me. All talented...but the combined genres didn't work!left before it ended,
Sturgill Simpson had the energy of someone half his age and put on and ripping 2 hr show of country honky tonk with a bit of soul. His band is top notch and highlights were the brilliant keybord/Leslie-Hammond player Bobby Emmett and the very smooth lead guitarist Laur Joamets. But.... the sound mix was horrible. (one less star) Very muddy and the vocal popped so heavily it was like a punch to the forehead every time Sturgill snag a note, he sings close to the mic. Funny when he was looking down to tune his guitar and he was a a bit further away from the mic he spoke to the audience... his vocal mix was perfect, clear and no pop. But i came away smiling realizing i was lucky to see such a talent, with intelligence and swagger. A real nice change from the beer&trucks/"chilling in my Levi's" corporate load hitting the airwaves and stages these days.
Slowly built the momentum of the show like a pro. Great band with keys and horns. First part was songs off first 2 LPs and a couple covers. Second half turned it on to do entire new album in sequence and blew the roof off the joint!! A devastatingly good show! Most powerful live voice I have ever heard...
