Vancouver Whitecaps FC History

The Vancouver Whitecaps may have only joined MLS in 2011 (alongside the Portland Timbers), but the team has a long history in the Pacific Northwest. The Whitecaps first launched in 1974  as a member of the now-defunct North American Soccer League and moved to the Canadian Soccer League in 1986 as the 86ers. The team would remain as the 86ers until 2000 when the Whitecaps name resurfaced as part of the A-League, which would later become the United Soccer League (USL).

Finally, on March 18, 2009, the Whitecaps were introduced as the newest franchise in MLS, where they would keep the Whitecaps name as part of the United States' top division. The club qualified for their first playoff run in 2012, becoming the first Canadian MLS franchise to do so. Meanwhile, the Whitecaps have claimed the Voyageurs Cup at the annual interleague Canadian Championship in 2015, 2022, and 2013 and count 2013 MLS Golden Boot winner Camilo Sanvezzo among their alumni.

    Where was the passion?

by Soccerforkicks on 2023-06-13BC Place - Vancouver

Okay, so i would not pay to see that again. Unlike most sporting events, there was no music or effort to amp up the crowd with the exception of the one goal that the white caps made after more than 80 minutes of nothing. The crowd tried to rally but... the fiest 80 minutea of the game seemed more like a warm up by the teams... sad really. Music would help....something....

    Super exciting

by Jazz on 2023-06-10BC Place - Vancouver

I love attending the matches with my family. I have been a soccer mom, and soccer nana for 23 years. I absolutely love soccer ⚽️. My son coaches numerous teams for ASA and is very well respected by the parents. The kids love him and he has so much fun, as well as patience. His girls team is going to the provincials this year. I’ll be there to cheer them on. Just as I love to cheer on the White Caps. Love love love it.⚽️

Close to perfect, but not completely....

by Erik on 2023-05-23BC Place - Vancouver

What happened to the team song ("White is the colour, soccer is the game"!) How could you leave that 'out' during the entire game. Also, shame on C.T.V. that they did not mention (one single world) anything about the game result in their 23.30 B.C. News. Shame on them...

    Great game, pretty great atmosphere

    by capn_og on 2022-09-21BC Place - Vancouver

Awesome game. First time going to a live whitecaps game in years. Bonus points that they won. Overall lots of staff on hand, ticket processing to get into the venue was actually fairly streamlined. There didn’t seem to be as many fans watching - probably because it was a midweek game, but the atmosphere was still pretty exciting. Overall great experience. Will try and be back next season!
