Was in Buffalo for the weekend and decided to take in the play with my sister, we had a very enjoyable time and thoroughly enjoyed the play.
While overall the play and the music were amazing, we were quite disappointed that for this the final performance of Love Never Dies in Buffalo 3 of the 4 major leads were not performing. The roles of the Phantom, Christine and Gustave were all being performed by replacements. Then in the second act the role of Christine was performed by another different cast member who was quite dissimilar to the original performer in appearance further diminishing the enjoyment of the show. The actor playing the Phantom did not have the same vocal talents as Garder Thor Cortes and in several numbers his voice was overpowered by Christine (Beneath a Moonless Night), the orchestra (The Beauty Underneath) and Raoul (Devil Takes the Hindmost) to name a few specific instances. My overall review would have been higher if not for these disappointments. I realize that leads cannot always perform but to have replaced 3 of the 4 main characters in 1 show greatly diminished my wife and I enjoyment of the performance.
If you have seen The Phantom of the Opera you should see this. A diverse amazing spectacle of entertainment. Wonderful show.
Visually spectacular and memorable music and it's better if you view this work without referencing the original Phantom of the Opera production. I feel the characters motivations disregard the much better original musical. Some dialogue and lyrics are cringey and over-dramatic, making it feel like an overwrought romance novel. Performers had incredible voices, especially with Christine and Phantom. Overall, an average musical worth seeing if you enjoy elaborate sets with top rate voices.
We knew from the opening act that this play was a dud. We gave it until the intermission and that is when we decided to cut our losses and leave. It was truly disappointing. I certainly would not recommend it to anyone.
Great performance. The only thing missing was renditions of the music from the first phantom. That would've made it perfect.
