Athletics History
The Athletics' history can be traced back to the American League founding member Philadelphia Athletics. The A’s won the AL Pennant and World Series in 1972, 1973 and 1974. The team returned to prominence in the ’80s behind the heavy-hitting “Bash Brothers” duo of Jose Canseco and Mark McGwire and won three consecutive AL Pennants in 1988, 1989 and 1990, as well as the 1989 World Series. Under president Billy Beane, the Athletics claimed the West division title seven times between 2000 and 2020.
Across host cities, the Athletics have won a total of nine World Series, 15 AL Pennants and 17 AL West division titles. The team's Hall of Fame alumni include Rollie Fingers, Dick Williams, Reggie Jackson, Dennis Eckersley and Rickey Henderson. A total of 12 Athletics players have won the AL MVP Award, including Jason Giambi in 2000 and Miguel Tejada in 2002, and five pitchers have received the Cy Young Award.
