Arrived with big expectations & all was surpassed with the musical skills, humor & daring of this unit. This was THE HOLIDAY TOUR & the material was rooted in Christmas music. They sound way bigger than just 4 guys.
They are:
bass (4 & 5 string, 5 string fretless)
banjo (acoustic banjo, 2 electric banjos)
alto & tenor sax, flute (played both saxes at once on occasion)
electric drums, acoustic drums played on a hanging keyboard while standing, box.
They had an out of control violin player join them on occasion (Jon Luc Ponty-esque) plus a group from Siberia called ALASH who were Tuva singers & played drums, spike fiddles, Siberian banjo & some kind of wind instrument. Pretty amazing. This group played on their own plus with the Flecktones.
I saw a change since the last time I caught these guys, & one for the better. Last time around, I was left a little confused as to the notion of their "group". I mean there was so much soloing that it got in the way of the concept of a band collectively playing songs. Not so last night. While there were solo spots, plus each band member took an entire song to solo with just them on stage, there was no doubt that the Flecktones are a band (and have been for 22 years).
They decided to play a song that included all 12 time signatures so they did the 12 Days of Christmas. Not wanting to do something as simple as that, they decided to play the 12 time signatures while utilizing every key...buy their CD!
