For the opening band and for Ben Howard, it was VERY hard to hear the vocals. The loudness of the instruments was over powering the vocals which made for a not so great experience. Similar happened at Pentatonics earlier this year.

Sweetheart, What Have You Done To Us

by Anonymous on 2018-10-11Budweiser Stage - Toronto

The review title is the name of a song by Keaton Henson (who I recommend) that conveys my feelings about the concert. Howard is no longer the sunny fellow from Every Kingdom and is moving away from delivering anthemic melodies of I Forget Where We Were. Rather, his new territory is ambient introspection. Since this concert was part of a tour to promote his new album Noonday Dream, I assumed going in that it would be heavy on new material. That was acceptable, since I enjoy the album, and find it contains certain moments as majestic as any of his past work. The set list consisted of 16 songs: the entire Noonday Dream album (10 songs), 3 new songs and 3 songs from I Forget Where We Were. Nothing from Every Kingdom or Burgh Island EP. The partly outdoor venue combined with the subdued music made for poor acoustics. The mood of the new album carried over to his remaining songs. That may have been intentional or an inadvertent reflection of the cold October night. Either way, the life-affirming intensity of his older songs, an essential element of their grace, was missing. The effect was that I barely recall the experience of Small Things and I Forget Where We Were despite the fact they are two of my favourite songs. Also, opening the encore with the tranquil Another Friday Night was deflating while closing with the sparse Hot Heavy Summer was capricious. It would have made sense to place these new songs earlier in the set list. Beautiful music was played that night and I am grateful for the experience. However, too much was left on the table unfulfilled. Perhaps next time Ben will make things right.

Ben Howard not quite as expected but worth seeing

by Anonymous on 2018-10-10Budweiser Stage - Toronto

Went in with pre-conceptions of what he was like after seeing him on the Brit Awards (a few years ago mind you) and listening to his 2011 album Every Kingdom... but had to put those away when the concert started... he's different now and in a different frame of mind. Really great lighting and band but the sound system left us wondering what the lyrics were. He's pretty quiet with the crowd and offers a few words here and there... no story telling about the songs. Many songs reminded me of Pink Floyd at times... Would see him again but only after catching up on the latest greatest he has out.

    Terrible sound quality.

    by Para9 on 2018-10-10Budweiser Stage - Toronto

It saddens me to leave this review because I actually love Ben Howard. He writes beautiful songs that are well orchestrated with great lyrics and flawless guitar playing. Unfortunately I saw none of that at this concert. The worst sound quality I have ever heard at a concert. It sounded like two radio stations mashed together and neither was coming in clear... played at full blast on a crappy old car stereo. I know all of his songs and could barely tell what was being played because the bass and the volume were all just cranked to the max. He played all of his new songs, was not on stage for very long and I couldn't understand a single word he was saying. No acoustic songs, no engaging with the crowd and a crappy setlist (from what I could make out). I have been to over 40 concerts, many of them at this venue, and I have never heard such terrible sound quality. Thank you for my first ever crappy concert... I never thought this day would come.

    Very Disappointed

by LoveJazz on 2018-10-10Budweiser Stage - Toronto

Very disappointed the artist chose not to play any songs other than his new stuff. He has lost me as a fan.

    Ben Howard Musician/Composer

by JeniCharest on 2018-10-09Budweiser Stage - Toronto

Ben Howard's music is in a class by itself, not settling in any genre that I'm aware of. The music is so full and round, one's ears can never get tired or bored of listening as there is so many different sounds to listen to. I have been an huge fan of Ben's for over 6 years now, and still listen to his albulm's from the beginning and love them just the same.

    What a letdown :(

by Shuarea on 2018-10-09Budweiser Stage - Toronto

I really love Ben Howard’s first two albums. His latest one is a really hard listen through. Mellow dramatic the whole way. I had seen mutiple video online of ben and his band playing live and I was really excited by what I saw. I don’t know if he was having an off night or what but he was missing lyrics left and right. Sound wise it was really hard to hear lyrics and the bass muttied any chance of hearing the music. He barely spoke to the crowd leaving us all disconnected by what was happening. Everyone I talked to felt it was a very awkward performance to watch. Lots of people just got up and left in the middle of the set. I don’t think I will plan to see Ben howard in the future.

Great concert and Time of year!

by CConsoli on 2018-10-09Budweiser Stage - Toronto

While at first disappointed that he wasn't going to play some of his old songs the atmosphere of the outdoor venue, visuals and the crisp weather made it a great night!
