About

Raised in Michigan and now based in Nashville, GRAMMY Award-winning Billy Strings is known as one of music's most compelling artists. Most recently, he unveiled "California Sober," a collaboration with legendary artist Willie Nelson--his first release since partnering with venerable label, Reprise Records.

The collaboration follows Strings' most recent full-length album, Me/And/Dad, which was released last fall and features Strings alongside with his dad, Terry Barber. The product of a longtime dream, the record features new versions of fourteen bluegrass and country classics that the two have been playing together since Strings was a young child.

Since his 2017 debut, Strings has been awarded Best Bluegrass Album at the 63rd GRAMMY Awards, Artist of the Year at the 2022 and 2023 Americana Music Awards, Entertainer of the Year at the 2021, 2022 and 2023 International Bluegrass Music Awards, Best New Headliner at the 2022 Pollstar Awards, Breakthrough Artist of the Pandemic at the 2021 Pollstar Awards and has performed on the 64th GRAMMY Awards, "The Late Show with Stephen Colbert," "Jimmy Kimmel Live!," PBS' "Austin City Limits," "Bluegrass Underground" as well as countless sold-out tour dates world-wide.

Billy Strings is nominated for three awards at the 66th Annual GRAMMY Awards: Best Bluegrass Album (Me/And/Dad), Best American Roots Song ("California Sober" feat. Willie Nelson) and Best Country Duo/Group Performance ("High Note" with Dierks Bentley).

I’m seen Billy Strings 10 times and every show was different. He changes set list nightly so you’re never quite sure exactly what he’s going to play even if you’ve been following his set lists on a given tour. That isn’t unique, but his blend of bluegrass, folk, country, rock and psychedelia provide his concerts with plenty of room to explore. Short songs, long jams that crescendo or just fixate on a groove, traditional songs and inspired originals, he’s got it all. His original music is terrific, with strong lyrics and melodic hooks, and his covers are eclectic. Displaying a vast knowledge of music which includes classic rock along with his obvious influences, I’ve heard him do Black Sabbath, the Allman Brothers and the Doors too, with a Doc Watson song to follow. The band is incredible, Jarrod on mandolin, Billy Failng on banjo, Royal on bass and Alex Hargraves on fiddle. They provide a sonic landscape for Billy’s incredible guitar solos when jamming, and each player can solo as well as any of their peers. Check out his albums for great original music, he has four and an EP. His latest might be his best yet, Highways Prayers. You can start there or go back to the EP, then check out Tinfoil & Turmoil, his first full length album. I started with his second Home, then grabbed his previous releases, then picked up his third and fourth upon release. I first saw him in 2021, and last saw him late last year, 2024. However you check out his music, see him in concert if you can, he puts on a fantastic show, with terrific lights as well.
