There must be something in the kick drum drumming, there must be something in the guitar strumming.”
It’s tempting to describe the chorus of Brett Kissel’s latest smash single, “Airwaves,” as what’s gotten him to this point, but that barely scratches the surface of the artistic growth Kissel displays on his new album, Pick Me Up. The pride of Flat Lake, Alberta has already reached a place very few other Canadian country music artists have attained, but defying the odds has been Kissel’s mission his entire life, the result of a tireless work ethic instilled while growing up on his family’s farm. Following the incredible success of his 2013 major label debut, Started With A Song, Pick Me Up shows that, like a thoroughbred just out of the gate, Kissel is hitting his stride.
For the new album, Kissel once again teamed up with CCMA Award-winner Bart McKay, as well as one of country music’s premier producers Mickey Jack Cones (Jason Aldean, Trace Adkins). The common thread was not an attempt to replicate the success of its predecessor, but to have the results reflect Kissel’s unstoppable drive to make his music bigger and better.
“There’s no other place I prefer to be than on stage,” Kissel says. “With all of the shows we did for the last album, we were totally prepared as a band when we went into the studio to cut the new material, and determined to exceed the fans’ expectations. Looking back, I might have been preparing for it even while we were finishing the last album, knowing that the next one needed to have more energy.”
It’s clear that rationale was behind the choice of “Airwaves” to be Pick Me Up’s first single, as the song established itself as a fan favourite after only a few live outings. Building on that kind of feedback from his audience has always been important to Kissel, and he takes a lot of pride in being one of the most active Canadian country artists on social media. It’s all fuelled his efforts to expand and enhance his live show, something that kicked into high gear once he hit the road in the fall of 2014 as special guest on multiple Grammy & CMA award winner Brad Paisley’s cross-Canada tour. Channeling that joyous experience into Pick Me Up became job one.
At the same time, Pick Me Up displays how far Kissel has come as a singer and songwriter, most evident on tracks such as “I Didn’t Fall In Love With Your Hair,” a tribute to his mother, a multiple cancer survivor, as well as “I Can Play Guitar,” containing playful insights of life on the Brad Paisley tour, and “Come Pick Me Up,” a poignant rumination on a failed relationship. A desire to present these varied facets of his life played a big role in choosing the material for the new album, Kissel explains.
“I really want everyone who buys one of my records to feel as if they’re getting a piece of me at that moment. I’m very fortunate to be a 25-year-old guy touring the world, but at heart I’m still the same kid who grew up in an amazing family on a cattle ranch in Alberta, and going though a lot of the same things my listeners are. To try to get all of that on to one record is always a pleasant challenge.”
After the year Kissel had in the wake of the success of Started With A Song, no one could be blamed for kicking off their boots, cracking a cold one or two, and imagining things couldn’t get any better. But coasting on his accomplishments has never been part of Kissel’s makeup.
The numbers say it all, however: His JUNO Award for Breakthrough Artist marked the first time in 17 years a country act earned the honour. That accolade seemed a lock for Kissel, despite some stiff competition, as it came on the heels of five Billboard Canada Top 10 singles from his major label debut album, Started With A Song.
It was the fulfillment of the dream Kissel has had from the moment he received his first guitar at age six. At 12, he released his first album and took his first trip to Nashville soon after. Many, many, many more trips later, Kissel and his wife settled in Music City, and suddenly the notion of being accepted by the country music establishment was within reach. Kissel’s debut on the Grand Ole Opry in the summer of 2015 brought that into even sharper focus.
“Getting a chance to spend time with Brad Paisley, George Strait and Garth Brooks—my heroes—and having them be so kind and generous, has been one of the best experiences of my life,” Kissel says. “I’m trying hard not to take it all for granted, but soak it all in and learn as much as I can. It really does feel like a big family here.”
Kissel is indeed adding his unique artistic perspective to the rich musical tradition that has inspired and sustained him for as long as he can remember. On Pick Me Up, there is no disputing he now belongs to that tradition and will continue adding to it for years to come.
Brett recently lead the 2016 CCMA nominations in London, Ontario, and took home multiple awards, including the coveted Male Artist of the Year, and Fans’ Choice Awards!

Brett put on a great show! The crowd was into it. They interacted with fans a lot. Great performance!
A friend and I decided to get last minute tickets to Brett and we’re so happy we did! Brett Kissel and Dan Davidson were SO good. Drink lines were fast and the workers were super friendly.
AMAZING! Out of this world! Heartwarming Fantastic
The concert was awesome from beginning to end. So much energy and the opening act was great as well.
This guys puts everything into his performances and the crowd loves every second of him.
Brett put on an amazing show. He played some new & old. He really caters to the crowd. It was his champagne birthday so CISN had the crowd sing to him. Jeremy Dallas & washboard union were great too. With that said, the opening bands were on until over 11. Lots of people left because it was getting so late and Brett came on around 1130 ish. By then, many were so drunk they couldn't stand. It made it difficult for those of us who were actually trying to watch it.
Was in the beer gardens, so surrounded by drunk people. spilling their drinks on you and pushing. If you don't like that kind of atmosphere then highly don't recommend going to a concert there. Seems like there was no cuff off for beer tickets for people that were intoxicated.
The concert was truly remarkable and can not wait until the next one! LOVE LOVE LOVE the music! Steve Newsome did a wicked job opening up and Brett Kissel was phenomenal as usual!
Brett is such a great performer! He's so down to earth and loves the appreciation of his fans. He uses the crowds energy in his performance and is so sincere when he thanks the crowd. If you get a chance to see this proud Canadian boy perform then do so. You won't regret it!
This was a really amazing concert!! I would love to see it again!! The Abrams that was the opening act were amazing and i really wish that they would have played/ sung more songs. or if they did a song together... the venue could have been better but overall it was a really great concert!
Brett Kissel was amazing, love his outgoing personality with the crowd, reminds me of Paul Brandt, such nice guys. the thing I don't like is the security at the College, there a bit too intense.
This was my 3rd time seeing Brett Kissel, he is such a great talent and so very humble and all about his fans. You walked out of this show feeling satisfied, your hard earned money spent on your ticket was worth every penny! As a fan you felt appreciated. Brett put on a fantastic show that left you wanting at least one more song.
This show was incredible. Brett never disappoints. Long setlist, great voice live, amazing performer. Really appreciated his fans and you can tell he loved to delivery perfection.
The opening act, the Abrams, set the tone for the entire show with their energetic and unbelievable performance of raw Kingston talent! Brett stepped on the stage and from that very moment until the end of BOTH encore songs, you could not hear him over the amazing crowd singing along to every single word. He was very interactive with the crowd and really showed why he was the winner of all the CCMA Awards and Juno Award. Completely incredible and left me speechless by the end of the night. I would highly recommend to see him in ANY performance he does. He is really worth every moment and every penny spent on tickets.
This was no doubt one of the best concerts thst I have been to. The venue was amazing and Brett puts on one he'll of a show.
Nice concert and venue.. good Way to spend Sunday night.. Wholesome
Brett did not disappoint! Interactive, entertaining
I have been attending concerts since I was very young! I have seen and met a lot of artists! This by far has been the most memorable experience ever! Brett is so polite and a Very genuine Canadian artist. Him and his band know how to get and hold onto the crowd! Incredible performance and vocals! He didn't hurry anyone along either during his one on one meet and greets. Even after 2 hours! Took time to sing with the children in the audience while preforming. interacting with the crowd through out his performance without missing a beat! Even though the venue would not allow my 2 young children into the all ages event (This had nothing to do with BK or his tour this was the venues choice) Brett made sure he sent me home with a video message for them! What other artist takes the time to do something so heartfelt. I recommend this concert to anyone. Young and old! I PROMISE YOU WILL NOT BE DISAPPOINTED!!!!!
I enjoyed his concert very much, he did his best to entertain everyone. He is a true Canadian. Very friendly and stayed to signed autograph for the fans.
Great music in a fun venue! Brett Kissel killed it, putting on a great show and the venue allowed you to enjoy it how you wanted: seated at a table, two-stepping on the dance floor, or cheering him on right up against the stage.
