And the collective ensures each new show is as special as the last, treating concertgoers to stunning musicianship and brilliant onstage chemistry. Lead singer Cathy Jordan shines in concert, and her soaring vocals are perfectly complemented by the band's flawless rhythm section. Ticket buyers lucky enough to catch Dervish on tour can expect a diverse setlist that includes everything from traditional ballads to lively jigs, making for a joyful and thoroughly unforgettable night of Irish music.

BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT:

Hailed as one of the world's premier Celtic bands, Dervish was formed in 1989 by five lads from County Sligo, Ireland. The drum, guitar, fiddle, accordion, and flute players spent two years perfecting their sound and recording an album of instrumental music under the name The Boys of Sligo. Then in 1991 they welcomed singer Cathy Jordan and changed their name to Dervish. The new group released their debut album Harmony Hill in 1993, a critically acclaimed landmark collection of traditional Irish music. Dervish has recorded an impressive 11 studio albums, including 2013's critically praised The Thrush In The Storm, which was recorded in just five days. Dervish has played for fans all over the world, and shared the stage with music icons including James Brown, Sting, and Beck. They also had the prestigious honor of representing Ireland at the Eurovision Song Contest in 2011.

The evening was OK but ...

by Bob on 2020-03-10National Arts Centre / Centre national des Arts - Ottawa

The way the evening unfolded was perplexing. There was no printed program nor MC and so one didn't know exactly what to expect! It opened with an excellent duo of 'Maritimers' on piano and violin which lasted some 25 minutes. They then left the stage and the lights came on with no explanation. Stage hands them took out the piano and set up gear for the next performers -- were they to be the Dervish, and how long would we have to wait? Some 20-25 minutes later, the lights dimmed and Dervish appeared. The main attraction had begun! The music was great but I was disappointed that at least some familiar Irish tunes were neither played nor sung nor that the the audience was engaged to sing along except during the encore. My wife and i were sitting in the first balcony centre which was great in theory, but I am 6 feet tall with a long back and size 13 feet and found my seat to be most uncomfortable (the seats were obviously designed for smaller people like my wife!). Furthermore the seat back design forced me to slouch forward (my wife came to the rescue with her wrap which she put behind my centre back), but not being able to put my feet under the seat in front, I felt jammed in like a sardine which in turn led to sore knees (this is the first time that we have sat in the balcony and as far as I am concerned, it will be the last!). In sum the program was fine but did need fine tuning -- and the seat was most uncomfortable for me which did not add to my enjoyment of our evening out!

    A Little Black

by C. C. on 2020-03-10National Arts Centre / Centre national des Arts - Ottawa

The show was excellent. However, the stage was black and the walls behind the band was black. I feel it needed to be brighter.

    Dervish

by C. N. on 2020-03-10National Arts Centre / Centre national des Arts - Ottawa

Absolutely a great evening at the Dervish concert. Energy. Humour. Toe tapping and clapping. The five musicians generated lots of powerful rhythms and Cathy Jordan their singer, drummer and spokesperson was so energetic and entertaining.

    Left my row snoozing

by C. on 2020-03-10National Arts Centre / Centre national des Arts - Ottawa

Great opening act. But. By leaving 30 minutes plus between the opening act and dervish left people restless. Was there enough time to use the bathroom or get a drink? When we’re they coming on? The band seemed to be just phoning it in. At one point my wife nudged next to point out at least three people who were sleeping in our row. Musician Friends of mine said they went to meet them after the show and said they wish that hadn’t. They were cold and dismissive. I would have paid no more than $40 to see them, and their performance was no where near their recorded work on albums. We were left disappointed.

    Don't make the audience wait

by Willie on 2020-03-10National Arts Centre / Centre national des Arts - Ottawa

The show was supposed to start at 7:30. There had been no (or only small-type) notice of a warm-up act (who was fine by the way). But Dervish did not hit the stage till around 8:15. That's unacceptable.
