Edmonton Oilers History

The origin of the Oilers goes back to 1972, when they were one of the founding franchises of the World Hockey Association. Once the league folded in 1979, they were one of four teams absorbed into the National Hockey League. It didn't take long for them to establish dominance in the league, reeling off five Stanley Cup Championships in seven years. They are tied with the Pittsburgh Penguins for the most championships since the NHL-WHA merger.

The Oilers of the '80s were a phenomenal dynasty with a roster that reads like the Hockey Hall of Fame: Wayne Gretzky, Mark Messier, Paul Coffey, Glenn Anderson, Grant Fuhr, Jari Kurri, plus a stellar supporting cast. Gretzky scored 92 goals in 1982, breaking Phil Esposito’s record for number of goals in a single season. He also recorded a record 215 points in 1985. During his time with the Oilers as center and team captain, Gretzky led the team to four Stanley Cup championships (1984, 1985, 1987, and 1988). By the time Gretzky finished his time with the Oilers, he held or shared a total of 49 NHL records.

In all, the Edmonton Oilers have appeared in the Stanley Cup Final eight times.

Edmonton Oilers at Rogers Place

NHL superstar Connor McDavid and NHL legends Wayne Gretzky and Mark Messier opened the doors to the spectacular Rogers Place in downtown Edmonton in October 2016. McDavid and his Edmonton Oilers bring excitement to Rogers Place nightly, with the statue of The Great One standing guard just outside. The state-of-the-art Rogers Place replaced the aging Rexall Place, and resulted in an explosion of business and residential growth in downtown's ICE District.

Got to go to my first oilers game at Roger’s place, was quite the spectacle and hugely entertaining. Connor’s 1000th career point and an overtime win. Nice to see this piece of hockey history.

Amazing venue and event-staffing needs tweeking

    by Cdnh2ogirl on 2024-10-18Rogers Place - Edmonton

This is our 4th time attending a game at Rogers Place. The times before have been seamless and fun. This time we went to enter the event the event staff were late in opening the accessible gate and then there was issues getting onto elevator as people without disabilities were pushing thru to get onto the elevator and not allowing those with disability access. The event staff at the end of the evening did a great job of directing people out of the arena. Really enjoyed the food and the staff in the Sportsnet Lounge.

    Amazing venue. Great game.

by Oilers game 6! Western conf champs! on 2024-06-05Rogers Place - Edmonton

Amazing venue. Great lighting good view from almost any seat. Food was good. Obvs everything is overpriced but that’s expected. We previously had seats in sec 219 which we found had a better view and more leg room. Sec 204 was a lot tighter with less room to move around and we felt sausaged into our row to be honest. A little more space would have been nice.
